Intense thunderstorms with risks of severe winds, hail, and dangerous swimming conditions to hit Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin.

[DULUTH] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:00 AM CDT on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for Northeast Minnesota and Northwest Wisconsin today, predicting a high likelihood of thunderstorms across the region. The National Weather Service warns that isolated to scattered severe storms may develop in the afternoon and evening, with the potential for damaging winds, large hail, and an isolated tornado.

    Severe Storms Threaten North-Central Minnesota

The greatest risk for severe storms lies in north-central Minnesota, extending east into the St. Croix River Valley. Residents should prepare for damaging winds reaching speeds of up to 60 mph, hail as large as 1.5 inches, and the possibility of an isolated tornado. Localized heavy rainfall could lead to minor flooding from Thursday afternoon into the night.

The National Weather Service advises that although the probability of severe storms is between 5 to 20 percent, the potential for significant impact remains. All residents in the affected areas should stay alert and take necessary precautions.

High Rip Current Risk in Twin Ports Area

In addition to the storm threat, strong easterly winds and elevated wave conditions are creating a high risk for rip currents today along the shores of the Twin Ports. The National Weather Service warns that swimming conditions will be hazardous, and individuals are urged to avoid entering the water.

"Rip currents can form quickly and unexpectedly," the advisory noted. "Avoid swimming and always heed local warnings."

    Extended Outlook: More Rain Ahead

While today's focus is on severe thunderstorms, additional chances for showers and general storms are expected to continue into the weekend, particularly from Saturday into Sunday. Residents should keep an eye on future forecasts as conditions could change rapidly.
