Late-night thunderstorms expected; swim risks rise for Sunday along Lake Michigan shores.

MILWAUKEE — Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:58 AM CDT on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for portions of east-central, south-central, and southeast Wisconsin as a cold front moves into the area late tonight. The National Weather Service warns of showers and thunderstorms developing overnight into early Friday morning, potentially impacting several counties, including Milwaukee, Waukesha, Dane, Rock, Racine, and Kenosha.

Thunderstorms to Arrive with Cold Front Tonight

Residents should prepare for potential thunderstorms late tonight as a cold front sweeps through the region. While severe weather is not anticipated at this time, the National Weather Service suggests remaining cautious, particularly in areas prone to localized flooding.

“Thunderstorms will develop along the cold front, bringing periods of heavy rain and gusty winds,” the advisory noted. Drivers should exercise caution, especially during early morning hours when visibility may be reduced.

High Swim Risk Expected Sunday Along Lake Michigan

Looking ahead, the National Weather Service has also highlighted a moderate to high swim risk along the shores of Lake Michigan on Sunday. The combination of strong winds and waves could create hazardous swimming conditions, particularly for inexperienced swimmers. Visitors to beaches in areas like Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha are urged to stay aware of surf conditions and to heed any warnings or advisories.

"Swimming in high-risk conditions can be dangerous," the advisory emphasized. "Stay informed about current conditions before entering the water."

    Stay Informed and Prepared

While spotter activation will not be needed today or tonight, residents are encouraged to stay updated on the latest weather information, especially as the cold front approaches. Local authorities and the National Weather Service will continue to monitor conditions closely.
