[NEWPORT] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:11 AM EDT on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

A Heat Advisory remains in effect for eastern North Carolina from noon to 7 PM EDT today, warning of dangerously high temperatures and humidity levels. The National Weather Service reports that heat index values could reach up to 106°F this afternoon, significantly increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses.

Heat Advisory: High Risk of Heat-Related Illnesses Today

The advisory affects a wide area, including Martin, Pitt, Washington, Dare, Onslow, Craven, and Carteret counties. Residents are urged to take precautions to stay cool and hydrated, particularly those at greater risk, such as the elderly, young children, and people with pre-existing health conditions.

"Hot temperatures combined with high humidity can lead to heat exhaustion or heat stroke, especially in vulnerable groups," the advisory emphasized. The National Weather Service recommends drinking plenty of fluids, staying indoors in air-conditioned environments, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak hours.

Storm Threat: Isolated Thunderstorms with Damaging Winds

In addition to the heat, there is also a threat of isolated, slow-moving thunderstorms this afternoon and evening. These storms may produce damaging wind gusts, posing an additional hazard to residents in the region.

The advisory noted, "Residents should be prepared for sudden thunderstorms that could bring strong gusty winds. Stay indoors during thunderstorms and away from windows."

Tips for Staying Safe During Heat and Storms

To protect yourself from the heat:

    • Drink water frequently and avoid beverages containing alcohol or caffeine.
    • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing and stay in air-conditioned places.
    • Limit outdoor activities to early morning or late evening hours.

    To stay safe during thunderstorms:

    • Seek shelter indoors immediately if you hear thunder.
    • Avoid using electrical appliances and plumbing fixtures.
    • Stay off elevated areas like hills and avoid open fields.

    Stay Informed and Be Prepared

While spotter activation is not expected, residents should monitor local weather reports and be ready for sudden changes in conditions.
