Heat index values near 100°F and scattered thunderstorms forecasted; stay hydrated and stay alert.

[WILMINGTON] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:44 AM EDT on Friday, August 30, 2024.

A Hazardous Weather Outlook has been issued for east-central Indiana, southeast Indiana, northeast Kentucky, northern Kentucky, central Ohio, south-central Ohio, southwest Ohio, and west-central Ohio due to high heat and potential thunderstorms. The National Weather Service warns of heat index values reaching the mid to upper 90s this afternoon, alongside a risk of isolated to scattered thunderstorms.

Heat Alert: High Temperatures and Humidity Today

Residents across the region, including cities like Cincinnati, Columbus, Dayton, and Covington, should prepare for hot and humid conditions today. The combination of high temperatures and humidity will push heat index values to near 100°F, particularly during the afternoon and early evening hours.

    Precautionary Tips for Heat:

    • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
    • Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to stay cool.
    • Avoid prolonged exposure to the sun and take frequent breaks if working outside.
    • Watch for signs of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, which include dizziness, headache, muscle cramps, and nausea.

Thunderstorm Risk This Afternoon and Evening

In addition to the heat, isolated to scattered thunderstorms are expected to develop this afternoon through the evening. While widespread severe weather is not anticipated, a few storms could become strong, bringing gusty winds as the primary threat. Storms will move at a slow pace, increasing the risk of localized impacts.

    Precautionary Tips for Thunderstorms:

    • Seek shelter indoors during thunderstorms and avoid windows.
    • Secure loose outdoor items that could become hazards in high winds.
    • Stay informed by monitoring weather updates throughout the day.

Extended Outlook: Low Probability of Hazardous Weather

The outlook for Saturday through Thursday indicates a low probability of hazardous weather. While thunderstorms are possible again Saturday night, no severe weather is expected at this time.

    Stay Safe and Stay Informed

With extreme heat and potential thunderstorms, residents are encouraged to remain vigilant and prepared. Keep an eye on weather alerts and take necessary precautions to protect your health and safety.
