Extreme Heat Warning Issued for Central Arizona, Risk of Heat-Related Illnesses Soars

PHOENIX — Issued by the National Weather Service at 1:53 AM on September 2, 2024.

A severe Excessive Heat Watch has been issued for south-central Arizona, including Phoenix, Scottsdale, and surrounding areas, from Wednesday morning through Friday evening. The National Weather Service warns of dangerously high temperatures ranging from 106 to 115 degrees, posing extreme heat risks that could lead to a significant increase in heat-related illnesses, including heat cramps, exhaustion, and potentially fatal heat stroke.

Heat Wave to Grip Central Arizona

The watch affects a wide region, including Aguila Valley, Northwest Valley, Tonopah Desert, Gila Bend, Buckeye/Avondale, Cave Creek/New River, and multiple neighborhoods in Phoenix and surrounding cities. With temperatures soaring to perilous levels, residents are urged to take immediate precautions to safeguard their health.

“An Excessive Heat Watch means that a period of very hot temperatures, even by local standards, may occur,” the National Weather Service noted. “Actions should be taken to lessen the impact of the extreme heat.”

    Health Risks and Precautions

The forecasted extreme heat can significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses. Symptoms can range from minor heat cramps to severe conditions such as heat stroke, which can be life-threatening if not promptly treated. The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments for those working outdoors.

    Key safety tips include:

    • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water and avoid sugary or alcoholic beverages.
    • Avoid Strenuous Activities: Reschedule heavy outdoor activities to the early morning or evening hours.
    • Dress Appropriately: Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing to help your body stay cool.
    • Know the Signs: Recognize symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke, such as heavy sweating, weakness, dizziness, nausea, and confusion.
