Extreme Heat Watch Issued: Temperatures Expected to Reach Up to 110 Degrees

LOS ANGELES — Issued by the National Weather Service at 12:49 PM on September 1, 2024.

A severe Excessive Heat Watch has been issued for a large portion of southwest California, including Los Angeles, the San Fernando Valley, and the Santa Clarita Valley from Wednesday morning through Friday evening. The National Weather Service warns of dangerously high temperatures ranging from 90 to 110 degrees, with little overnight relief, posing significant health risks to residents.

    Heat Wave Targets Southern California

The heat watch encompasses a wide array of locations, including the Cuyama Valley, Santa Lucia Mountains, Southern Salinas Valley, San Luis Obispo County Mountains, Santa Ynez Valley, Los Angeles County Inland Coast, and the Santa Monica Mountains, among many others. These areas are expected to experience soaring temperatures that can put vulnerable populations, such as the elderly, young children, and those without air conditioning, at risk.

    Health Risks and Safety Precautions

The National Weather Service warns that this prolonged period of extreme heat can lead to dangerous heat illnesses, especially for those who are active outdoors or lack access to air conditioning. Individuals are advised to take the following precautions:

    • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids, avoiding caffeine and alcohol which can dehydrate the body.
    • Limit Outdoor Activities: Reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or late evening hours when temperatures are cooler.
    • Seek Air Conditioning: Spend time in air-conditioned spaces such as malls, libraries, or designated cooling centers.
    • Check on Vulnerable Individuals: Regularly check on elderly relatives, neighbors, and others who might be more susceptible to heat-related illnesses.

“An Excessive Heat Watch means that a period of very hot temperatures, even by local standards, may occur,” the National Weather Service advises. Residents should be prepared for the heat by ensuring access to cool environments and staying informed about the latest weather updates.

    Affected Areas and Expected Conditions

The heat watch includes a vast region, stretching from coastal cities like Santa Monica and Malibu to inland communities such as Pasadena, Glendale, and the Antelope Valley. With temperatures possibly peaking at 110 degrees in some areas, the risk of heat-related emergencies remains high, especially in regions without significant overnight cooling.
