Marquette and Alger Counties Warned of Dangerous Swimming Conditions Through Tonight

    Byline:
MARQUETTE — Issued by the National Weather Service at 4:48 AM on September 6, 2024.

Severe Rip Currents and High Waves Threaten Lake Superior Beaches

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Marquette has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for Marquette and Alger Counties due to dangerous swimming conditions along the Lake Superior shoreline. The warning is in effect through this evening, as high wave action and strong rip currents are expected to create life-threatening situations for swimmers.

High Risk for Rip Currents Today, Moderate-to-High Risk on Saturday

Today, the NWS reports a high risk for rip currents along the beaches of Lake Superior, continuing with a moderate-to-high risk on Saturday. These hazardous conditions are expected to affect popular areas such as Middle Bay north of Presque Isle, Little Presque Isle, the Au Train River mouth at Au Train, Grand Marais Harbor, and parts of Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.

Life-Threatening Conditions: Stay Out of the Water

With waves in rapid succession, even strong swimmers can quickly become fatigued, increasing the risk of drowning. The NWS emphasizes that past fatalities and rescues have occurred under similar wave conditions at the specified locations. Residents and visitors are strongly advised to remain out of the water and avoid any beach activities that involve swimming or wading.

    Precautionary Measures and Preparedness

The NWS urges everyone to stay informed by checking the latest updates and following local advisories. The combination of high wave action and rip currents can pull even the strongest swimmers away from shore, making it crucial to prioritize safety.
