Dangerous Waves and Currents Pose Threat to Swimmers Along Shoreline

MILWAUKEE — Issued by the National Weather Service at 3:56 AM on September 7, 2024.

Beach Hazards Statement in Effect Through This Afternoon

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Milwaukee/Sullivan has issued a Beach Hazards Statement for the shores of Sheboygan, Ozaukee, and Milwaukee counties through this afternoon. The advisory warns of life-threatening waves ranging from 4 to 6 feet and dangerous shoreline currents, making swimming conditions perilous. The public is advised to stay out of the water and avoid hazardous areas like piers and breakwalls.

    Life-Threatening Waves and Currents Expected

The NWS has identified a high swim risk for local Lake Michigan beaches due to the combination of high waves and strong onshore winds. These conditions can lead to strong structural and longshore currents, which are especially dangerous around piers and breakwalls. The presence of rip currents is also a possibility, further increasing the danger to swimmers.

No Hazardous Weather Expected Beyond Today

For the period from Sunday through Friday, no additional hazardous weather is expected across the region. The NWS does not anticipate the need for spotter activation today or tonight, suggesting a quiet weather pattern after today's elevated beach risks subside.

    Precautionary Actions for Beachgoers

Beachgoers are strongly advised to heed warnings and remain out of the water. Even experienced swimmers should avoid entering Lake Michigan under these conditions, as strong currents can quickly overwhelm and pull individuals away from shore. Residents and visitors should also steer clear of piers, breakwalls, and other structures where currents can be more intense.
