Residents Advised to Protect Plants as Frost Advisory Takes Effect Overnight

GAYLORD — Issued by the National Weather Service at 12:56 PM EDT on September 7, 2024.

Frost Advisory in Effect: Temperatures to Drop as Low as 33°F Overnight

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Gaylord has issued a Frost Advisory for parts of Northern Lower Michigan, including Kalkaska, Crawford, Oscoda, Missaukee, Roscommon, and Ogemaw counties. The advisory is in effect from 2 AM to 8 AM EDT Sunday, with temperatures expected to fall between 33 to 36°F, leading to potential frost formation that could harm sensitive vegetation.

Protect Your Plants: Cold Temperatures Expected in Low Spots and River Valleys

Residents are encouraged to take precautions by covering tender plants or bringing them indoors to avoid damage from the frost. The most likely areas for frost formation will be isolated low spots within hilly terrain and river valleys, where colder air tends to settle overnight.

High Swim Risk Continues for Northern Lower Peninsula Beaches

In addition to the frost advisory, a high swim risk remains in effect for beaches across the Northern Lower Peninsula, where dangerous waves and currents are expected. Beachgoers are advised to stay out of the water and be cautious around the shoreline, as strong currents can pose serious hazards.

No Additional Hazardous Weather Expected This Week

Looking ahead, the NWS indicates that no additional hazardous weather is expected from Sunday through Friday. Spotter activation will not be required, and the region is expected to experience calm weather conditions after today's alerts.

Precautionary Actions for Residents and Visitors

    • Cover Sensitive Plants: Use blankets, sheets, or other coverings to protect plants that are vulnerable to frost.
    • Avoid Swimming: Dangerous water conditions persist along the beaches of Northern Lower Michigan; it’s best to avoid swimming until conditions improve.
    • Monitor Weather Updates: Stay informed about changing weather conditions, particularly overnight when frost is expected.
