LINCOLN, ILIssued by the National Weather Service at 3:00 AM CDT on August 27, 2024.

Excessive Heat Warning for Central Illinois

The National Weather Service (NWS) has issued an Excessive Heat Warning for central, east central, and west central Illinois, in effect from 11 AM to 8 PM CDT on Tuesday, August 27, 2024. Heat index values are expected to climb to a dangerous 115 degrees, creating hazardous conditions for residents across the region.

Cities affected include Springfield, Peoria, Champaign, Bloomington, Decatur, and Danville.

    Precautions Against Extreme Heat

The extreme heat and humidity significantly increase the risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion and heat stroke. The NWS advises:

    • Stay hydrated by drinking plenty of water.
    • Remain indoors in air-conditioned spaces whenever possible.
    • Avoid strenuous outdoor activities, especially during the hottest parts of the day.
    • Check on vulnerable neighbors and relatives, particularly the elderly and those without access to air conditioning.

Severe Weather Risk with Approaching Cold Front

In addition to the excessive heat, an approaching cold front will bring the potential for scattered thunderstorms late Tuesday night into Wednesday. Some storms could turn severe, with a marginal risk for large hail and damaging wind gusts.

Residents are encouraged to stay informed of changing weather conditions and be prepared for possible severe weather outbreaks during this period.

    Extended Heat Outlook

While temperatures may cool slightly by Wednesday, heat index values will still climb into the 100 to 105 degree range during the afternoon. The extreme heat will continue to pose a threat to health and safety through midweek.
