Heat index values to reach 101°F; air quality advisory warns of unhealthy ozone levels across Ohio, Indiana, and Kentucky.

[WILMINGTON] — Issued by the National Weather Service at 2:54 AM EDT on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

A Heat Advisory and an Air Quality Alert have been issued for parts of southeast Indiana, northern Kentucky, and southwest Ohio today, warning residents of dangerously high temperatures and unhealthy air conditions. The National Weather Service reports that heat index values could soar up to 101°F this afternoon, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses, while the Southwest Ohio Air Quality Agency cautions that ozone levels may exceed healthy standards.

Heat Advisory in Effect from Noon to 8 PM Today

The Heat Advisory is set to begin at noon today and last until 8 PM EDT, impacting cities including Cincinnati, Lawrenceburg, Florence, Newport, and Hamilton. Residents are urged to take precautions against the heat, such as drinking plenty of fluids, staying indoors in air-conditioned areas, and avoiding strenuous outdoor activities during peak heat hours.

The National Weather Service emphasized, "Hot temperatures and high humidity can lead to heat illnesses, especially in vulnerable populations." Symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke include dizziness, rapid pulse, nausea, and headache. Immediate action should be taken if these symptoms are observed.

Air Quality Alert: Elevated Ozone Levels

An Air Quality Advisory is also in effect until midnight EDT tonight for several counties across Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana. Areas affected include Butler, Warren, Hamilton, and Clermont counties in Ohio; Boone, Campbell, and Kenton counties in Kentucky; and Dearborn County in Indiana.

Residents are encouraged to take measures to reduce ozone levels by:

    • Carpooling, biking, walking, or taking public transportation instead of driving.
    • Refueling vehicles after 8 PM.
    • Avoiding idling vehicles and using gas-powered lawn equipment during peak hours.

Ozone levels can pose health risks, particularly for sensitive groups such as children, the elderly, and those with respiratory conditions.

    More Heat Ahead on Friday

The heat will continue into Friday, with heat index values again expected to reach around 100°F in the afternoon. The National Weather Service advises all residents to remain cautious and take necessary steps to stay safe in the heat.
