    Local roundup: Schaffer scores lone goal in Royals’ boys soccer win

    Charlie Schaffer’s first-half goal held up as the game-winner as Holy Redeemer defeated Pittston Area 1-0 in a Wyoming Valley Conference boys soccer matchup.

    Schaffer’s goal came at the 9:03 mark in the first half and was unassisted. Tyler Tarnalicki made seven saves for the Royals.

    Hazleton Area 1, Williamsport 0

    Radames Cordero converted on a penalty kick in the first half to lead Hazleton Area to victory.

    The game was a defensive struggle, with only seven shots on goal combined between the two teams.

    FIELD HOCKEY

    Wyoming Area 2, Lake-Lehman 1

    Ella McKernan’s third-quarter goal proved the difference-maker in a Wyoming Area win over Lake-Lehman.

    McKernan’s goal was assisted by Juliana Gonzales. Ainsley Flynn also scored for the Warriors, giving her team an early 1-0 lead.

    Gianna DeCesaris scored the lone goal for Lake-Lehman, assisted by Sophia Lenza. Ruby Sorber made 10 saves for the Black Knights.

    Pittston Area 4, Holy Redeemer 0

    Four different Patriots scored, and the Pittston Area defense shut out Holy Redeemer for the win.

    Maddie Karp, Julia Homschek, Giuliana Latona and Alivia McAndrew each scored for the Patriots. Karp and Allison Kipp each had an assist, as well.

    GIRLS TENNIS

    Dallas 3, Wilkes-Barre Area 0

    The Mountaineers swept singles play and were leading in both doubles matches before play was halted due to rain.

    Cat Finn, Mahi Dhol and Cassie Alaimo each won in straight sets for Dallas.

    Tunkhannock 5, Berwick 0

    The Tigers won all five matches in straight sets in a sweep of Berwick.

    Molly Keiser, Addy Pineau and Tal Pineau all won their singles matches for Tunkhannock.

    GOLF

    Wyoming Seminary 158, MMI Prep 208

    Nick Werner shot a one-under-par 34 to earn medalist honors in Sem’s win over MMI Prep. Ayden Wilkinson shot a 38 for the Blue Knights, while J.P. Hay and Caleb Aponick each shot 43.

    Joe Mayernik was the low scorer for MMI Prep, shooting a 48.

    Wyoming Valley West 164, Hanover Area 200

    Kaden Dittus shot a 38 to lead a strong all-around effort from the Spartans in their win. Ray Chimok shot a 41, Chris McNew carded a 42 and Jake Dubaskas turned in a round of 43.

    Jeff Peck led Hanover Area with a 46. Caeden Stavitzski and Dylan Martin each shot 50 for the Hawkeyes.

    GIRLS VOLLEYBALL

    Nanticoke Area 3, Central Columbia 0

    The Trojans completed the sweep with set scores of 25-17, 25-16 and 25-15.

    Haley Verazin had six kills and five aces to lead Nanticoke Area. Alivia Evans had 12 service points, and Amiah Ceruti dished out 12 assists.

    Dallas 3, Mid Valley 0

    The Mountaineers cruised to a victory in straight sets over Mid Valley. Set scores were 25-16, 25-12 and 25-6 all in favor of Dallas.

    Izabela Makukova had five kills and six service points. Juliana Torres had a big day in the service game, with seven aces and 18 service points.
