The House Republican Internship Program at the Indiana Statehouse is a great opportunity for young Hoosiers to kick-start their professional careers. The application window recently opened, and I encourage college students and recent graduates of all majors to apply.

The many benefits of the program include learning and improving skills such as communication, research and critical thinking. Interns are paid $900 biweekly with opportunities to earn academic credits through their college or university. They also get free parking and are eligible to apply for a competitive $3,000 scholarship to use toward undergraduate and graduate expenses.

Interns work with me and other lawmakers as well as House Republican staff during the legislative session, which starts in January and ends in April. It's an opportunity for them to work in a fast-paced, professional environment and learn more about how our state government works.

These internships offer opportunities for students to work in various departments related to their studies, including legislative operations, policy and communications.

Legislative interns work with a group of representatives and have a variety of tasks including researching and responding to legislative questions, tracking bills through the legislative process, and assisting with committee coverage and reports.

Interns in the communications department are also assigned to a group of representatives while writing press releases, email newsletters and blogs. They also monitor news coverage, as well as have the opportunity to work on social media, graphic design and audio/visual production.

Policy interns research and track legislation through the process, prepare committee reports for legislators, and assist staff and lawmakers with legislative and financial inquiries.

Applications are available online at indianahouserepublicans.com/internship and are due by Oct. 31.

I encourage all eligible students to apply for this excellent opportunity. If any Hoosiers in House District 65 have any questions regarding the internship program, please reach out at in.gov/h65 or call 317-232-9600.

State Rep. Chris May (R-Bedford) represents House District 65, which includes all of Lawrence County, and portions of Jackson, Orange and Washington counties.
