TIMPSON, Texas ( KETK ) — After coming up short in the state semifinals three years in a row, the Timpson Bears broke through in 2023, making it to Arlington and winning the state championship.

Head coach Kerry Therwhanger announced his retirement the following January, and defensive coordinator, Patrick Gandy was named the new head football coach and athletic director this past March.

Timpson wins program’s first football state championship

Gandy has been with Timpson since 2012, serving in several coaching roles, and was promoted to D.C. in 2019.

The state championship last season was the exclamation point on one of the best runs in Texas high school football, where the Bears only lost three games over four years.

Gandy credits coach Therwhanger for being a mentor throughout his coaching career and looks forward to the fall, where he will walk these familiar sidelines, but this time, as the man in charge.

High school football is almost here, and the defending 2-a division state champions will open the season on the road when they travel to West Sabine to take on the Tigers.

Kick-off will be Friday, Aug. 30 at 7:00 p.m. from Tiger Stadium in Pineland.
