Westminster City Council Approves Franchise Agreement and Property Sale
At a special meeting on Wednesday, the Westminster City Council approved the second reading of a Franchise Agreement with Spectrum and an Ordinance to sell the Riley Street property to Josh Thomas for $8,000. The Franchise Agreement allows Spectrum to provide cable services within the city, setting the franchise fee at the state maximum of 5%. Regarding the property sale, after an initial bid from Jonnor Investments was withdrawn, Thomas agreed to purchase the property at a reduced price, with an amendment requiring property tax payments if the project isn’t completed within 24 months. Staff and the City Attorney recommend approving the amendment and the sale contract, authorizing the City Administrator to finalize the agreement.
Municipalities Invited to Paint the Town Green – Go Lions!
The City of Lavonia is participating in the Franklin County Lion’s campaign to Paint the Town Green in anticipation of the start of football season. The Franklin County Lions are inviting businesses, residents, and the entire community of Lavonia to join them in showing our school and community spirit by decorating in green during August and September.
Apple Festival Luncheon to Feature Ellen Weaver as Keynote Speaker
The Westminster Rotary Club will host Ellen Weaver, South Carolina’s 19th State Superintendent of Education, as the keynote speaker at the Apple Festival Luncheon on September 6 at 1:00 p.m. at Westminster Baptist Church Fellowship Hall. A Greenville native, Weaver, who was elected Superintendent on November 9, 2022, is dedicated to enhancing educational opportunities for all students in South Carolina. She holds a B.A. in Political Science and a Master’s in Educational Leadership from Bob Jones University and previously worked as State Director for Senator Jim DeMint and founded the Palmetto Promise Institute. Weaver is known for her commitment to education policy and aims to improve foundational skills, recruit top educators, and engage with community leaders to support student success. Oconee County Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Committee to Review Grant Applications
During a noon hour meeting today, the Oconee County Parks, Recreation, and Tourism Committee will convene in the council chambers at 415 S. Pine St., Walhalla, to evaluate various grant applications. Among the requests are funds for a 5K race promotion in Seneca, updates to Main Street banners in Walhalla, and a sesquicentennial celebration in Westminster. The committee will also consider grants for advertising by the Discover Upcountry Carolina Association, security improvements at the Foothills Agricultural Resource Marketing Center, and a construction project at the Wild Hearts Equine Therapeutic Center. Additionally, discussions will include $22,500 in proposed funds for deck repairs at South Cove County Park and Chau Ram residence.
