Severe weather slams central Illinois, again
For the second time in as many nights, damaging winds caused widespread damage and power outages. The storms Monday night resulted in staggering wind gusts. A corn crib was destroyed by a 105 mile per hour wind gust near Camp Grove in Marshall County. South Pekin clocked a 78 mile per hour wind gust, Elmwood 71 mph and Lewistown 70 mph. Wind gusts of 60 to 70 miles per hour were common over most of the area. Several communities reported wind damage with the main problem being trees and tree limbs knocking down power lines and causing roads and streets to be blocked. We’ll get a better idea of damage when it’s daylight. The Monday night storms hit as some communities were cleaning up from storms Sunday night which caused damage in Henry and Bloomington.

CHICAGO — Even in a state where most prison sentences are automatically cut in half, Damajae Mitchell’s situation is an eye-opener. Mitchell, 20, pleaded guilty late last month to carjacking and trying to rob a 69-year-old woman on the Northwest Side. When he committed the crime, officials said, he had another carjacking case pending in juvenile court.
Autopsies Scheduled for Today Following Fatal Crash Friday
White County Coroner Chris Marsh says autopsies are scheduled for today in Springfield following a fatal accident just outside Carmi Friday. Illinois State Police say a 2000 Maroon Ford Mustang was southbound on Route 1 approaching 1350 North while a 2023 white Kia Forte was northbound at the same location. The vehicles collided near the center of the roadway. The drivers of both vehicles were pronounced dead on scene. A passenger in the Mustang, identified on social media as Kenny Ripley, was taken to an Evansville hospital with injuries. He suffered a broken arm, leg and foot as a result of the crash and is due for surgery Monday morning. Funeral arrangements are pending for Stormy Baker.
