Road Warrior: Building construction to affect 14th Street, ProMedica Parkway

One of the feeds to downtown Toledo’s main entrance to northbound I-75 will be constricted this week during construction at Lucas County’s new dog shelter.

Lane closings will affect 14th Street between Monroe and Washington streets for five days, starting Monday. Commuters planning to enter the freeway from the 14th Street ramp should consider using Washington Street to approach it rather than taking Monroe or other downtown streets west and turning left on 14th during peak travel times.

Another off-street construction project will require lane closings this week on ProMedica Parkway just north of the ProMedica Toledo Hospital area. Northbound ProMedica’s right lane will be closed through Friday between Monroe and Central Avenue.

Also downtown, a sign repair will restrict part of Summit Street for three days. Summit’s southbound right lane will be closed between Jefferson Avenue and Monroe. Consider Huron Street as an alternative.

Lane closings also are likely early in the week on Michigan Street between Jackson Street and Jefferson while city crews change those blocks’ lane configuration. The related work on Erie Street between Jefferson and Cherry Street was completed Friday, with Erie narrowing from three lanes to two and the left lane marked for left turns only at Jefferson.

Motorists on Erie should be especially alert for vehicles stopping in the live traffic lanes to drop people off in front of Toledo Municipal Court, which has long been a problem around 9 a.m. and will likely get worse with one fewer lane for other motorists to get around them. Parking was already available in front of the courthouse but restricted to police and other official vehicles.

The last of Lucas County’s four new roundabouts to be built this year is scheduled to start construction Monday, as will a new Ohio Department of Transportation roundabout in Wood County.

The Lucas County Engineer’s Office’s roundabout project at McCord Road and Bancroft Street will, for its first 30 days, close westbound Bancroft to through traffic west of Holland-Sylvania Road and McCord to through traffic south of Bancroft.

Bancroft will be detoured to Dorr Street at Holland-Sylvania, while McCord will be detoured to King Road as far as Dorr. Additional detours will follow as work progresses.

ODOT’s new roundabout will be at State Rts. 199 and 281, west of Wayne. Route 281 will be detoured until late September via State Rt. 25 and U.S. 6, while Route 199 will be detoured via U.S. 6 and 23. Great Lakes Demolition Company holds the project’s $1,434,987.50 contract.

The first of the year’s new Lucas County roundabouts, at Garden and Albon roads, opened last month and the second, at Hill Avenue and Centennial Road, is nearly complete. The engineer’s office said in a social-media post late last week that Hill and Centennial could reopen by week’s end if the weather cooperates.

McCord also has lane closings between Angola Road and Kipling Drive for a village of Holland resurfacing and sidewalk replacement project.

Also in Toledo’s western suburbs, the weeklong closing of Holland-Sylvania Road and Sylvania Avenue for intersection reconstruction remained scheduled to start Monday. Use Central Avenue as an alternative to Sylvania and McCord or U.S. 23 as an alternative to Holland-Sylvania.

Be alert for late-merging vehicles heading east on the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge because of how a work zone was set up on that bridge last week.

While Cherry Street’s two eastbound lanes are jogged to the left at the bridge’s west end, the left lane becomes a left-turn only lane approaching the signal at Riverside Drive. There are pavement markings for this but no signs, and I observed several drivers making last-second lane changes or otherwise showing they expected that lane to go through.

The city could do worse than to hang a Left Lane Must Turn Left sign on the back side of the King bridge’s westbound drawspan gantry for the duration of this traffic pattern.

    • I-75: Resurfacing closes mainline lanes at night between State Rt. 199 and Glenwood Road. Lane closings also possible for bridge work at Lime City Road, which is closed. Parapet wall repairs may still close a southbound lane at the DiSalle Bridge.

    • I-75: Left lane may be closed near Hancock County Road 99 north of Findlay for a bridge project.

    • I-75 (Mich.): Lane closings, Exit 5 (Erie) to north of Exit 9 (LaSalle), for roadway reconstruction. Southbound traffic is crossed over to the northbound side. The southbound exit ramps at Exit 9 (South Otter Creek) and Exit 6 (Luna Pier) are closed; use LaPlaisance Road (Exit 11) or Erie Road (Exit 5) instead.

    • Ohio Turnpike: Exit 34 (State Rt. 108/Wauseon) is closed for reconstruction; use Exit 25 or 39 instead. A bridge repair requires short work zone with one of three lanes closed each way between the Elmore and Fremont interchanges.

    • I-280: Traffic shifts to the right between State Rts. 2 and 51 for median reconstruction. Two lanes remain open southbound but northbound traffic is reduced to one lane through the zone until mid-August.

    • I-475/U.S. 23: No shoulders and traffic is shifted between U.S. 24 (Exit 4) and Angola Road for reconstruction and widening. Both ramps connecting southbound I-475/U.S. 23 with westbound U.S. 24 are closed until mid-August. Detour through other interchange ramps to get from southbound I-475 to westbound U.S. 24. Use Ford Street and Dussel Drive to reach southbound I-475 from westbound U.S. 24. Monclova Road will be closed at I-475 between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m. Monday through Wednesday for overhead bridge work; detour via Briarfield/Technology/Jerome.

    • U.S. 20A/State Rt. 2: Closed at Main Street (westerly junction of State Rt. 64) in Swanton for sewer construction until mid-September. Detour via U.S. 20 between State Rts. 295 and 109. Route 64 detours via Routes 20A/2, 295, and 20.

    • U.S. 24 (Fearing): Lanes closed between Airport Highway and Hill for overpass replacement. Consider Byrne Road as an alternative route between Airport and Hill.

    • State Rt. 2: Lane closings west of State Rt. 163 in Ottawa County for slope repair.

    • State Rt. 25 (Anthony Wayne Trail): Inbound right lane closed between Copland and Glendale for multi-use path construction.

    • State Rt. 25/U.S. 24 (Anthony Wayne Trail): Lane closings between Monclova Road and Detroit Avenue for finish work related to a recent repair, repaving, bike path, and landscaping project.

    • State Rt. 65 (Craig Memorial Bridge): Closed indefinitely because of vehicular damage to safety gates. Use the Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge or I-280 Veterans’ Glass City Skyway instead.

    • Martin Luther King, Jr. Bridge: Reduced to one lane each way for reconfiguration related to the Glass City River Walk. A second eastbound lane becomes a left-turn lane at the signal from Riverside Drive.

    • State Rt. 65 (River): Closed to through traffic between State Rts. 64 and 235 for culvert replacements until mid-August. A posted detour uses U.S. 24, on the opposite side of the Maumee River, between Route 64 and State Rt. 295.

    • Broadway Street: All lanes except one inbound lane are closed to through traffic between Newbury Street and Western Avenue for street reconstruction. Western (State Rt. 2) remains closed at Broadway and several other cross streets also are closed nearby.

    • Glendale Avenue: Culvert work requires lane closings between Fallbrook Road and Cherrylawn Drive until mid-October.

    • U.S. 23/30: Left lane closed in both directions at the State Rts. 53/67 interchange on Upper Sandusky’s north side for pavement replacement.

    • U.S. 6: Flag zones between U.S. 23 and State Rt. 53 in Sandusky County for resurfacing.

    • State Rt. 795: Lanes closed between I-75 and State Rt. 51 for repaving, which mostly occurs at night (7 p.m. to 7 a.m.). The eastbound ramps at East Broadway until Wednesday, followed by the westbound ramps.

    • Hill Avenue/Centennial Road: Intersection closed for roundabout construction until late July. Use Angola as an alternate for Hill and King as an alternate for Centennial.

    • McCord Road/Bancroft Street: Roundabout construction closes westbound Bancroft approaching McCord and southbound McCord after Bancroft. Detour to Dorr for Bancroft and to King for McCord.

    • Salisbury/Holloway roads: Intersection closed for roundabout construction until late August. Use Maumee-Western (U.S. 20A) as an alternate for Salisbury and either Albon or Manley as alternates for Holloway.

    • Summit Street (Mich.): The I-75 Exit 2 Connector is restricted to a single lane governed by traffic signals for ongoing bridge work just north of I-75.
