County, local BOCES to receive Juul settlement funds
TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. — Tompkins County and area educational organizations are set to receive $657,313 from a multi-state settlement payout from the e-cigarette company Juul Labs. The funds must be used for programs to reduce or deter youth e-cigarette use, research into such programs or enforcement of anti-vaping regulations.
Public meetings set for Tompkins County traffic safety plan
ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) — Four public meetings are coming up this month to address traffic safety in Tompkins County. The first is an online presentation on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. In-person meetings for the Joint Safety Action Plan, which includes several municipalities across the county, kick off next Friday at Newfield Old Home Days from 4-9 p.m., the Ithaca Farmers Market on July 27th from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. at the Pavilion, and lastly the Trumansburg Farmers Market on Wednesday, July 31 from 4-7 p.m.
United Way of Tompkins County Announces Award & Impact Fund Recipients
United Way of Tompkins County (UWTC) announced their list of community members recognized for their contributions on Monday. United Way takes note of positions in the community who go above and beyond for Tompkins County by taking part in UWTC activities. They account for their community campaign chair, volunteer of the year, an “unsung” hero who contributed privately, a non-profit partner, and a business who was paramount to the program’s success. Severe Monday storm led to record-breaking number of emergency calls
TOMPKINS COUNTY, N.Y. — Tompkins County officials believe the county set a record for calls for emergency service in response to the severe thunderstorms on Monday. The severe weather prompted Governor Kathy Hochul to declare a statewide state of emergency. The storm produced heavy rain, high winds, lightning, and even inch-sized hail in some areas.
Tompkins County Emergency service center got a record number of calls Monday
The Tompkins County Emergency Communications Center had what it believes to be the highest volume of calls in a single day on Monday, July 15, due to severe storms. The center said in a Thursday statement that the vast majority of calls received by the center from the afternoon through the late evening on July 15 were for trees and wires down, as a line of severe thunderstorms moved through the area, producing heavy rain and high winds.
