A 68-year-old Seaside Park man was charged with leaving the scene of a fatal accident after striking and killing a pedestrian in Toms River Sunday afternoon, authorities said.

John Marrone was also charged with causing death or injury while driving a suspended or revoked driver's licence, Ocean County Prosecutor Bradley D. Billhimer said in a statement.

Police were called to Route 166 and Old Freehold Road in Toms River about 2:50 p.m. on the report of a pedestrian struck by a motor vehicle.

Police found out that Gonzalo Jimenez-Hernandez, 48, was hit as he stepped onto the roadway.

Investigators from the Major Crime Unit-Vehicular Homicide Squad of the prosecutor's office, Toms River police and the Ocean County Sheriff’s Office Crime Scene Investigation Unit found that a black Ford F-150 headed north on Route 166 struck Jimenez-Hernandez and fled the scene, Billhimer said.

Authorities later found the truck, registered to Marrone, unoccupied in a nearby apartment complex, Billhimer said. Shortly after, Marrone was seen on foot near the truck, he said.

Marrone was taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River where his blood was drawn, Billhimer said. The results are pending.

Marrone was taken to Ocean County Jail where he is awaiting a detention hearing. Lawyer information for Marrone was not immediately available.

Marrone has a long history of driving infractions. In the last 30 years, he has amassed some 116 violations. The disposition of each of those charges was not immediately known.

Among those, 33 were for driving while a license or registration was suspended or revoked.
