President Joe Biden is pulling out the heavy artillery and releasing the opening salvo after years of being light on Trump.

The Biden campaign has been avoiding cheap political bickering, gossip, and insults until now. Biden's team criticizes Trump for sitting for "softball townhalls" on the same day the former president said a third criminal charge is probably on the way.

"The former president has yet to go back to Wisconsin since announcing his campaign, nor has he provided an explanation for his failure to deliver on his promised American manufacturing boom," said Kevin Munoz, spokesperson for the reelection campaign of Biden.

    The new path forward

The remarks mark a turning moment in Biden's campaign for reelection.

It's a sign that the campaign sees Trump as the most serious challenger in the Republican primary race.

Biden would attack his Republican rivals during the Democratic National Committee (DNC). The more assertive approach to Trump may allay some Democrats' concerns about his slow-paced campaign. Many want Biden to be more aggressive and quicker to judge. Others find Biden's demeanor refreshing.

Biden is silent on Trump's legal issues. The campaign focused on economic problems despite breaking news of Trump's yet another major legal trouble.

Biden and his staff instructed the DNC and his campaign to avoid talking about Trump's indictment for his handling of secret documents earlier this year.

Biden has committed to making sure the Justice Department is impartial. However, several Democrats are concerned that he is missing out on a strong line of attack. Indeed, Trump would take this opportunity and hammer Biden if given the chance.

President Biden seems aware of the need to strengthen his reputation with voters. He's been projecting an image of a president who buries his head into deep work and instead of chasing PR.
