Ron DeSantis said charges against rival Donald Trump over the January 6 Capitol attack would only inflict further harm to the country.

“I hope he doesn’t get charged…I don’t think it’ll be good for the country,” DeSantis said.

The Florida governor also tried to dismiss worries about the condition of his bid for the Republican presidential nomination, in which he is trailing Trump by nearly 30 points and is having issues with fundraising and staffing adjustments.

Media coverage is biased against Trump, according to DeSantis

DeSantis did, however, perhaps unintentionally, draw attention to a perceived issue with his campaign: that it heavily relies on criticisms of "wokeness" in public life, even if many Americans cannot articulate what he means.

DeSantis also refrained from criticizing Trump even though the former President is facing unprecedented legal trouble, including 71 criminal indictments and hundreds of civil court cases.

First President to be criminally charged

Trump is not just facing criminal charges. He's facing a very steep triple-digit number of criminal indictments. The ex-president seems very comfortable in courts, where he's been a regular over the past five decades plowing through thousands of court cases.

Trump's been through so many legal affairs that more than one Wikipedia page is needed to cover his personal, presidential, and criminal charges.

Trump snatched the media's attention, saying he's been informed about being the subject of special counsel Jack Smith's investigation into his attempts to rig the 2020 election. He had been ordered to appear before a federal grand jury in Washington, D.C.

The former President, who is already being investigated for receiving hush money and keeping secret information, insists that he did nothing illegal.

DeSantis passed up the opportunity to make a lasting impression when questioned whether Trump should be held accountable for electoral interference in pivotal states, culminating in his encouragement of the deadly January 6 attack on Congress.

The governor made no mention of the allegations that Trump and Walt Nauta, his valet, handled and retained confidential information after Trump left office.
