    Shawnee County opens cooling centers

    TOPEKA ( KSNT ) – Shawnee County Parks & Recreation will be opening a number of designated cooling centers with heat indices expected to be more than 100 degrees.

    “Shawnee County Parks + Recreation continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of its residents by maintaining designated County facilities as cooling centers during extreme weather conditions,” Parks & Rec wrote in a press release.

    On Monday, July 29 the National Weather Service ( NWS ) of Topeka issued an excessive heat warning for all of northeast Kansas. Dangerously hot conditions with heat indices up to 112 degrees are expected. The warning is in effect until 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024.

    Cooling centers will be open at the following locations:

    • Central Park Community Center
      • 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
      • 1534 SW Clay
    • Crestview Community Center
      • 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
      • 4801 SW Shunga Dr
    • Hillcrest Community Center
      • 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
      • 1800 SE 21st Street
    • Garfield Community Center
      • 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
      • 1600 NE Quincy St.
    • Oakland Community Center
      • 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.
      • 801 NE Poplar
    • Shawnee North Community Center
      • 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
      • 300 NE 43rd St.
