With high temperatures blanketing Topeka this week, efforts to help residents cool down are in place.

The Shawnee County Parks and Recreation Department announced it will maintain cooling stations as heat indexes are predicted to exceed 100 degrees.

An excessive heat warning for Shawnee County was issued at 1 p.m. Monday. It's expected to end 7 p.m. Thursday, AccuWeather predicted.

"Shawnee County Parks + Recreation continues to prioritize the safety and well-being of its residents by maintaining designated County facilities as cooling centers during extreme weather conditions," said Shawn Zears, marketing and communications supervisor.
