Characters of the County: Al Cohen Lights Up Lincoln County
It was a combination of things that led to Al “Big Al” Cohen’s status as a Maine celebrity: his iconic suspenders, the tie-dye gorilla or tiger shirts, his larger-than-life personality, the firework store, and the popular commercials he was featured in about his store Big Al’s Super Values, which sat on Route 1 in Wiscasset for nearly 35 years.
Southport selectmen set special town meeting for July 24
Southport residents will decide whether to adopt two ordinances during a July 24 special town meeting. Selectmen approved the special town meeting during their July 3 regular meeting. One proposed ordinance deals with implementing housing goals established by LD 2003. In 2022, Gov. Janet Mills signed the legislation establishing statewide and regional housing production goals and a municipal role in achieving those goals. The law imposes density and other requirements for affordable housing developments that preempt inconsistent municipal regulations. It requires municipalities to allow up to four dwelling units on each lot where housing is allowed, depending upon the lot and whether it contains an existing dwelling. It also requires municipalities to allow accessory dwelling units in any area where housing is permitted and comply with certain accessory dwelling unit requirements.

Returning to the Boston Post Cane
This time last year I wrote a column asking whether there might be any takers for Wiscasset’s Boston Post Cane. You know, the time-honored tradition of passing a ceremonial walking stick to the town’s oldest resident to keep for as long as they live, after which it’s passed on to the next oldest resident. It’s more or less a New England thing, like celebrating Patriot’s Day on the third Monday of April every year.
Boothbay Railway Village: It’s the 60th anniversary!
Boothbay Railway Village was founded by George McEvoy in 1964. It opened for the first time in 1965 on Memorial Day weekend. Many of the buildings were saved from demolition by him, including Freeport Station. which he transported in nine pieces over three days in Feb. 1964, and where visitors buy their tickets; the 1847 Boothbay Town Hall in 1990; and Spruce Point Chapel in 1995.

BLING is pleased to announce the launch of New Gloucester Rides, a volunteer transportation program serving New Gloucester residents, developed with Lifelong Maine and AARP guidance and tools, and modeled on successful programs in other Maine towns, including Age-Friendly Saco and Central Maine’s Neighbors Driving Neighbors. Transportation is a vital need in rural Maine for older people and for people with disabilities. Those who do not drive, or who give up their driver’s license as they age, whose family members live in distant states, whose health care providers are miles away, face a profound lack of transportation. Volunteers vetted and trained by New Gloucester Rides will provide rides to medical and dental appointments.
