Kevin Durant Is The New Olympic High Scorer

Kevin Durant is already one of the world's best in his sport on and off the court, but now he has made a new record for himself. He is now the highest-scoring player for the United States in the Olympics in basketball history. Today, Durant surpassed Lisa Leslie, who had an unforgettable 488 career Olympic points.

The U.S. faced Brazil in the Paris Olympics’ quarterfinals when Durant became the all-time leading Olympic scorer when he scored his 489th Olympic point. It isn’t very often that someone makes Olympic history, and Kevin Durant has made history on the international stage.

    Kevin Durant Makes Olympic History

Lisa Leslie notched this record by playing in four Olympics. She earned four gold medals for the United States until she retired leaving behind her great international career and scoring record. Since that time, she has become influential in women's sports.

    Durant Overcomes Injury

Kevin Durant came into these Olympics while enduring a calf injury that limited his playing time. He has been coming off the bench for Head Coach Steve Kerr. In his limited time, he has won himself the title of the second-leading scorer on the squad. He averaged 16 points before entering the game against Brazil. Before this game, after winning against Puerto Rico, the world had been watching and waiting for the moment when Kevin Durant would score that point, and break the record.

    Durant Discusses His Achievement

Kevin Durant said this following tonight's game against Brazil:

"It feels good to accomplish stuff like that with this group of guys. It’s a fun group of guys and I like being in our locker room with them. It’s cool to do that type of stuff, but we’re just trying to get that gold. We always play together; we play off of each other. We’ve got two different units that play different ways, but we’re all still on the same page. It’s been a fun first three games, and we’re looking forward to the medal rounds now."

There is one thing about being the world's best and living up to it. The US is favored to win Gold in men's and women's basketball this year, and if they do, Kevin Durant will set another record, and win his fourth medal in the process.

Before Paris, when Durant was in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, he played a major role in their winning. While he played in six of their games, he averaged 20.7 points, shooting 52.9% from the field and 37.5% from beyond the three-point arc. Even in rebounds and assists, he averaged 5.3 and 3.7 respectively.

    What Is Still To Come

Now that the US men's basketball team has won over Brazil, Durant scored 11 points, one of them in the third quarter; he made another Olympic triumph for the red, white, and blue. The Suns superstar isn’t done yet, as there is more to come for the county as they continue their chase for gold.

In two days, the US men's basketball team will take on Serbia, and along with it, Durant will look to add to his record. This will give future basketball Olympians something to strive to see if one day they can stand with the greats in making Olympic history. With such an achievement, standing on the podium will be even better for Kevin Durant with a gold medal around his neck.
