Your boy Calvin Ridley got paid this offseason y’all! He’s so rich, he could buy two farms, knock them down and build his own castle. We’re talking 92 Million American Dollars over 4 years. That’s a whole lot of bitcoins baby! And now that Calvin Ridley is playing for the Tennesse Titans, maybe he’ll mosey on down to Graceland and take Elvis’s throne.

But did he deserve it? Let’s look at his history. In 2022, Calvin Ridley missed the whole season to focus on mental health. It was a very controversial yet admirable decision, but it spelled the end of his time as an Atlanta Falcon. In his last full season with the Atlanta, Calvin Ridley caught 90 balls for 1,374 yards and 9 touchdowns. He was a fantasy football player's dream! But soon it became a bit of a nightmare.

Calvin Ridley Has Disappointed Before

After his year off, Calvin Ridley was traded to the Jacksonville Jaguars for a 2023 fifth-round pick and a 2024 fourth-round pick. His first year ended up being a solid if not spectacular season in Jacksonville, where he teamed up with Trevor Lawrence. He caught 76 balls for 1,016 yards and 8 touchdowns, which was a pretty solid output. Despite that, the Jaguars decided not to resign Calvin Ridley and instead signed Gabe Davis from the Buffalo Bills and drafted Brian Thomas Jr. in the first round out of LSU.

So Calvin Ridley hit the free agent circuit where he was looking to get paid. A lot of pundits thought he’d sign with the Patriots, given their ample cap space and need at wideout. However, Calvin Ridley passed on New England and signed with the Titans instead. His signing along with that of fellow wide receiver Tyler Boyd signaled that Tennessee was serious in their attempt to help Quarterback Will Levis reach his full potential.

Can Calvin Ridley Be a Force?

In Tennessee, Calvin Ridley is coming in as the number-one wide receiver. He should be raring and ready to go. DeAndre Hopkins, who previously held that title, slots in as the number two WR. Along with Boyd, they form a dangerous trio that opposing defenses have to focus on. But all that wideout depth could actually hurt Calvin Ridley while he’s in Tennessee.

Why? Because we don’t know yet if Will Levis is that dude. And if he struggles, Calvin Ridley and the whole team will not meet expectations. On top of that, we don’t know if Levis will consider Calvin his top guy. Will could feel more comfortable with Hopkins based on their history. He could also form a connection with Boyd just like Joe Burrow did in Cincinnati.

After looking around, Calvin Ridley decided to join a crowded wide receiver room in Tennessee this offseason. It’s his third team thus far in his short NFL career. He’s only been in the league for 5 years. And now that he’s been paid, it’s fair to question his motivation for the upcoming season. Because of that, he’s a risk in fantasy football this year.
