Occult: The Great Power of Symbols and Archetypes

    User-posted content

Archetypes and symbols rule the narrative of life and its many facets. This is true in reality and the occult. Symbols are the easiest communicative language, as they are depictions of a real, tangible item or situation; and archetypes are living symbols of universal principles that are held by many.

These two representations are used outside of spiritual practices but are lent to almost all of the major non-Abrahamic religions. By this nature, it demands questioning as to whether or not there truly is a power in these principles, and if so, how is it presented tangibly?

Archetypes in Psychological Research: Jungian Principles

Carl Jung, a contemporary of Sigmund Freud, was a psychologist, cultural scholar, and philosopher who described the twelve archetypes of a personal narrative. Jung described the archetype as a resonating and repeating motif of nature that was replicated throughout time by all people. He posited that there is a primordial force, whether natural or divinely imbued upon the Earth and Mankind, that drives the soul to search for meaning in one of twelve ways.

In his theses, Jung qualified an archetype by narrower scrutiny, he stated that a true archetype of the human spirit must transcend generations by way of tradition. Mythology, fairy tales, and even dreams present these archetypes to the psyche, and through the narrative of one's life, they are manifested and propagated in the physical form.

Jung contemplated the archetype as a means by which the "id," or the true self for the layman, forms and maintains the relationship with the "ego," or presented self.

Spiritually, the archetypal structure has been given to figures in religious settings; the Jewish faith ascribes a great deal of significance to Moses' exodus with his people, and the Christian faith derives meaning from the life, death, and resurrection of Christ as the providence of the savior archetype. So, too, does the spiritual alternative derive meaning from the archetypes found in rituals such as tarot readings, occult seances, and other divination or invocation practices?

    The Occult and Jung Intersect

Jung's archetypes are broken into twelve distinctions; twelve is a highly spiritually significant number in and out of the mainstream; in the fringe Occult and alternative spirituality, twelve is found to have repeated itself time and time again. These representations are found in the symbolism and symbology of the occult.

Sacred geometry often ties itself to numerology, such as the Unicursal Hexagram, the Ankh, the YHShVA formula, and dozens of other occult ritual symbols that all tie to a repeating of the number six or twelve to denote a significance. Jung's findings on the twelve archetypes are linked to the human experience spiritually and psychologically through this logic.

If one were to traverse a Tarot Deck, inspecting the faces of the cards against the Jungian Formulae, one could break the deck into twelve categories easily. Providence, perchance, or maybe the spiritual world, is simply the way the mind rationalizes natural phenomena. This, too, was posited by Jung.

Jung clarified that the belief in the metaphysical, at any era or stage of life, was an effort to deceive the senses of the truth. This has not stopped the world, particularly the spiritually minded, from using Jung's research to prove the contrary.

Many have countered that the persistent attempt at explaining the nature of the mind has only furthered the understanding of the soul and its many needs and that symbols, such as those previously listed, are only depictions of the same principles found through research. These symbols connect with the viewers and resonate with those who seek answers outside of the zeitgeist and clinical textbooks.

    Symbolism and Symbology

Symbolism is the way knowledge and ideas are presented through communication as visual metaphors; this is something that your Fifth-Grade English Language Arts teacher taught you. Symbology is the study of symbols and their nature or derived meanings.

As a practitioner of any spiritual rituals or meditations, it is dependent on your preference in whether you will allow yourself to be influenced by symbols you are faced with.

If you are presented with depictions of occult symbols, their intended meaning may not be what you resonate with, and you may find yourself scrolling through a list of symbols and their origins. Therein lies the true power of the Occult Symbols, by and large. The Perception of the metaphysical existence of meaning to the user becomes the meaning and shapes the relationship one has with the symbol.

Ultimately, this is the nature of the archetype and symbol. Their true power is derived purely from one's experience and relationship with them, and it is shaping the culture around these ideals slowly and surely. It may be so that one day, our current fringe is tomorrow's mainstream, and the power of these symbols is determined to be other than they are today.
