Boston Red Sox Jarren Duran Apologizes For Comment

The Boston Red Sox are coming off a series where they got swept by the Houston Astros in a three-game home stand over the weekend. It was not what the Boston Red Sox expected nor what they are used to. With the game and series not going the Red Sox way, emotions got the best of one particular player on Sunday afternoon's game with Red Sox OF Jarren Duran. The incident happened in the sixth inning of the game. What took place?

Duran Apologizes For Unprofessional Comment

During Sunday's afternoon game against the Houston Astros, Red Sox OF Jarren Duran was in between pitches and down in the count 1-2 and was also 0-of-2 in the game. A fan that was sitting behind home plate was shouting "Tennis racket! Tennis racket! You need a tennis racket!" That was when Duran faced the fan and said, "Shut up you f-ing f---t."

Immediately, after the game, Duran said he "fell far short" in the post game interview. Duran apologized by saying "During tonight's game, I used a truly horrific word when responding to a fan," Duran said in a statement released by the Boston Red Sox:

"I feel awful knowing how many people I offended and disappointed. I apologize to the entire Red Sox organization, but more importantly to the entire LGBTQ community. Our young fans are supposed to be able to look up to me as a role model, but tonight I fell far short of that responsibility. I will use this opportunity to educate myself and my teammates and to grow as a person."

The Boston Red Sox did address the situation with Duran and made their own statement: "We strive to be an organization that welcomes all fans to Fenway Park, and we will continue to educate our employees, players, coaches, and staff on the importance of inclusivity."

During a pregame ceremony, Duran was honored with the Heart and Hustle Award. This award recognizes one player per team who demonstrates a passion for the game and best embodies its values, spirit, and traditions.

Final Thoughts

This incident between Duran and the fan was not professional. Fans from all sports heckle players while at games to give AN advantage to the team they are rooting for. Even though most of the time it's in one ear out the other by players.

Athletes are held to a high standard when it comes to professionalism and keeping emotions at bay even in tough scenarios and scenery. The one positive that can come from this incident is that Jarren Duran knew immediately what he said to the fan was completely wrong. Also, the Boston Red Sox organization and Duran took action after the game to address the situation and kept it professional by apologizing to the fans and the LGBTQ+ community.

The Boston Red Sox head into another three-game series starting Monday night against the Texas Rangers. Their previous series with the Rangers was a success, winning the series 2-1. The Boston Red Sox will move forward from this incident that happened and get back to hopefully putting some wins together to make the playoffs.
