Stephon Marbury Disagrees With Olympic MVP LeBron James

Former NBA player Stephon Marbury was no fan of LeBron James being named the 2024 MVP at the Paris Olympics. LeBron James just finished up his fourth time playing on the United States men’s Olympics basketball roster. He was the oldest player on the roster.

In six tournament games, which were all wins, James averaged 14.2 points, 6.8 rebounds, 8.5 assists, and 1.3 steals. He and Team USA defeated France in the Gold Medal Game, 98-87, making him a now three-time Gold medalist.

James finished the game with 14 points, six rebounds, 10 assists, and two steals in 33 minutes of play.

During the ceremony, he was named USA Men’s Basketball Olympics MVP.

Stephon Marbury No Fan of LeBron James

In attendance courtside at the closeout game was Stephon Marbury, former NBA All-Star who played 13 seasons in the NBA before signing to play in China. He was at the game with another former NBA Star of 19 seasons, Carmelo Anthony.

Marbury congratulated LeBron James when he was celebrating with Anthony. But the MVP did not acknowledge him.

After the news broke about James winning MVP, Stephon Marbury wrote on Instagram that he disagrees with it.

Marbury commented: “They gave the MVP to the wrong player. Maybe they called out the wrong name by accident. I think we need to try to rewind ⏪ the moment when @stephencurry30 displayed himself as the best shooter who ever touched the ball. In international ball, if you can’t shoot, you can’t have the ball at the end of the game.

“I get LeBron is the King to many, but let me say this: when you give him what he doesn’t deserve, you basically say that because of what he’s done, he should receive such a high honor on the biggest stage. No, he didn’t earn it this time.”

Stephon Marbury ended up deleting his comment, though it already had 500 likes.

In addition to his comment, he reposted a video of Curry on his story and said “this is the real MVP!” He also commented “this is wrong,” on several posts about the King.

Marbury was at the center of several jokes by NBA fans due to his social media activity, and also took a lot of heat by fans of King James.

Stephen Curry’s First and Last Olympics

This was Stephen Curry‘s first time winning a Gold Medal, and likely his last. Despite being arguably the greatest three-point shooter of all-time and one of the greatest players of this generation, he’s never played in the Olympics until this year.

He averaged 14.8 points while shooting 50% from the field and 47.8% from three. In the closeout game he finished with 36 points, eight rebounds, 2 assists, and one steal in 33 minutes of playing time.

For most of the Olympic tournament Curry struggled. His best game other than France came against Serbia where he finished with 24 points.

It looks unlikely that Curry will suit up for Team USA for the 2028 Olympics.

“I didn’t see myself playing in Paris 2024, too. But four years from now, I can’t see it. This might not come around again.”

Curry was not the only one to say this. James is in the same boat as him.

“Nah, I can’t see myself playing in Los Angeles 2028.”
