Headbutt Leads to Massive Brawl in Newcastle Game

In the Newcastle vs. Southampton game, there was more entertainment than just the scoreline. A massive brawl erupted on the pitch following a surprising headbutt from one of the Newcastle players that saw him sent off with a red card. In just the 28th minute of play in the first half at St James’ Park, tensions rose as players pushed one another after a free kick. What ensued was a dangerous headbutt, and one of the players was sent off before the game even reached halftime.

    Newcastle vs. Southampton Fight

Newcastle defender Fabian Schaer was riled up by the opposing team and let his frustrations get the better of him in the game. After a nasty challenge, Newcastle was awarded a free kick; however, Diaz shoved Schaer after the play ended, inciting an intense reaction that had all the fans up and out of their seats.

Scaher reacts without thinking, shoving his first in Diaz’s face and then putting his forehead aggressively on Diaz’s. The Southampton striker fell and was clutching the spot where he was ‘headbutted’ — although the real incident was only pressing faces together, with Diaz falling down for theatrics.

    VAR Decision

Despite a VAR call conducted to check the incident, Schaer was still given a red card. The ref must have thought the act was violent enough for him to be sent off. During the sending-off, players from either side gathered to defend their respective teammates. Schaer’s Newcastle teammates claimed there was no way that should be a red card, whereas Southampton teammates argued that Scare was being violent towards Diaz.

And Diaz didn’t hear the end of it. The Newcastle crowd repeatedly booed Diaz for the remainder of the game, including every time he touched the ball, whenever his name was announced, and even when he went out of bounds to get the ball for a throw-in or walk down the tunnel at half time/

Luckily for Newcastle, even with ten men, they could score through Joelinton to go into the break with a one-goal advantage. However, Newcastle has a lot to be disappointed about — Schaer now has a three-match ban, the opening first three games of the season. This leaves Howe with very few numbers to put at the back for the upcoming matches.

    Newcastle Looking Forward

Newcastle will face Bournemouth next Saturday in an away game, one that they will have to win to progress further up the table. The following week, they play a mid-week game against Nottingham Forest to see who will progress to the third round of the EFL Cup.

Newcastle currently sits in eighth place, tied with the top eleven teams with three points after the initial Premier League game. Let’s hope that key defenders like Trippier, Kelly, and Hall will be able to hold their own while Schaer is out with the red card suspension.
