Real Madrid Held to Draw by Mallorca in Season Opener

Real Madrid could not secure a win in their opening match of the 2024-25 La Liga season on Sunday evening, as they were held to a 1-1 draw by Mallorca. Carlo Ancelotti’s team took the lead in the 13th minute when Rodrygo scored with a superb shot into the far corner, assisted by a clever flick from Vinicius Junior.

Despite their early advantage, Real Madrid struggled to capitalize further in the first half, and Mallorca equalized in the 53rd minute. Dani Rodriguez’s corner, which initially seemed harmless, was met by Vedat Muriqi, who scored with a powerful header past Los Blancos goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois.

Mallorca had two excellent opportunities to take the lead later in the game, but Antonio Sanchez missed both chances, first firing just wide and then shooting over the bar. The situation worsened for Madrid when Ferland Mendy was sent off for a reckless challenge on Muriqi.

Overall, Mallorca’s performance was commendable, as they managed 11 attempts on goal and earned a well-deserved point.

The away team took the lead in the 13th minute when Rodrygo scored with a beautifully curled shot into the far corner, following a clever flick from Vinicius that set him up. Both Brazilians combined beautifully to set up the goal. As soon as the second half started, Mallorca’s Vedat Muriqi arrived to take on a powerful header effort that ended in the back of the net past Courtois.

Real Madrid were struggling in the match. The stats show us that Real Madrid despite having 65% of the ball possession and registering a total of 13 shots, was unable to score the second goal which might have been enough to secure the three points.

What’s Next for Real Madrid

Real Madrid will seek their first win of the 2024-25 La Liga season when they face Real Valladolid on August 25. However, they will be without Ferland Mendy, who is suspended following his red card against Mallorca. The club will not be making any new signings before the transfer window closes, nor will any players be leaving (as announced by Carlo Ancelotti).

David Alaba is expected to return by the end of the year, and Eduardo Camavinga is set to be back next month. Meanwhile, Mallorca will aim to build on their strong start to the season as they travel to Osasuna on August 24.

Real Madrid will be keen to improvise before the next clash against Real Valladolid on Sunday. The match will be held on the home turf of Madristas (Estadio Santiago Bernabeu). The key areas that the club lacks, need to be restored quickly as they search for consecutive La Liga titles.
