Gavin Stone Leads LA Dodgers In Series Opener Win Over Mariners

The Los Angeles Dodgers secured a 3-0 victory over the Seattle Mariners as Gavin Stone led the way in the first game of the nine-game homestand. This win was powered by a standout performance from pitcher Gavin Stone, who led the charge on Monday.

Gavin Stone was simply sensational, striking out 10 Mariners over seven innings. By the fourth inning, Stone had already set a new career high in strikeouts, fanning eight batters. He allowed only two hits, matching his career low for hits allowed in a game. His performance was reminiscent of his impressive outing on April 26, 2024, against Toronto.

It was a big-time seventh inning of play for the Dodgers. Back-to-back homers from the bats of Gavin Lux and Max Muncy were all Los Angeles needed to cross the plate. That was Lux’s ninth of the season and third in the last seven games. Muncy provided a needed homer after missing half of the season due to an injury that kept him from playing for three months.

Seattle’s Struggles and Woo’s Solid Start

Seattle right-hander Bryan Woo pitched six scoreless innings, but he couldn’t hold off the Dodgers in the seventh. Besides the home runs, Woo had been effective, recently coming off delivering two scoreless seven-inning performances. In the end, he gave up two key home runs and finished his night after giving up two runs on three hits.

The game served as Justin Turner‘s first return to Los Angeles, and he was honored before the game. Turner played with Los Angeles for nine seasons and went 1-for-3 in the series opener. The LA Dodgers also played tremendous defense with Evan Phillips on to close for a perfect ninth inning to get his 16th save. With Muncy back in the lineup, the Dodgers also debuted Tommy Edman. Edman was also with the team after a late July trade with the St. Louis Cardinals. The infielder has been recovering from wrist and ankle problems. He had a hit in his Los Angeles opener.

LA Dodgers’ Standings and Mariners’ Struggles

The LA Dodgers remained in first place in the National League West with the victory and stayed three games ahead of the San Diego Padres and four games in front of the Arizona Diamondbacks. The loss continued the Mariners’ woes on this nine-game road trip after being tied for first place in the American League West as recently as August 11. They now trail the Houston Astros by five games.

However, the victory over the Mariners will set the tone early in this homestand for the Dodgers. What was most important for them in winning the game was bang-up pitching by Gavin Stone and timely home runs by Lux and Muncy. Now they have to keep it going as they move forward with their homestand to stay atop the division. The Mariners go back to the drawing boards, hoping for a reversal of fortune.
