Five days before their Bundesliga opener at Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich will have one last pre-season friendly when Grasshopper Club Zürich visits the FC Bayern Campus on Tuesday at 11:30 am CEST. Bayern Munich started their 2024/25 season with a solid 4-0 victory at Ulm in the DFB Cup first round last Friday.

The team, under new coach Vincent Kompany, was strong in challenges, aggressive in pressing, and sharp in attack. Kompany noted, “Games like this aren’t always easy. It was crucial that we won our challenges and were aggressive in winning second balls,” though he acknowledged there’s still room for improvement. Thomas Müller, who scored twice, remarked, “We were serious but not mistake-free. It was a good performance, though we can still enhance our play with the ball.”

The friendly against Grasshoppers will be a chance to refine tactics and give late-returning players some game time. Kompany emphasized after the Ulm match that the key is to maintain the right energy.

Team Form Before the New Season

Thomas Müller and Harry Kane both scored in Friday’s victory over Ulm. Bayern Munich’s pre-season record has been strong. Except for a 1-1 draw in Düren, they have won all their friendlies against Rottach-Egern, Tottenham Hotspur (twice), and Tirol, and also gained confidence from their competitive match against Ulm. The players are eager to make an impression as said by Kompany. They now need to carry that momentum into their Bundesliga opener at Wolfsburg on Sunday.

Bayern Munich’s upcoming opponents, Grasshopper Club Zürich, have had a shaky start to their league season, currently sitting at the bottom of the Swiss Super League with just one point from four games. However, they come to Munich with renewed confidence after a decisive 9-0 cup victory over Regensdorf in the first round. The Swiss champions hope to use this game to regain their form ahead of next weekend’s Super League match against second-placed Sion.

A win here in this friendly will provide a great boost as extra practice for both the teams as they very soon start their league campaign later this weekend.

Kompany will be without several key players, including Tarek Buchmann, Leroy Sane (groin injury), Hiroki Ito (foot injury), Daniel Peretz, and Arijon Ibrahimovic (both dealing with muscle issues), though only Sane might have been expected to start.

Harry Kane, who faced his former team Spurs in pre-season, played 45 minutes in the 3-0 victory over Tirol, scoring early before being substituted at halftime. He is expected to start against Ulm. New signing Joao Palhinha is likely to make his second competitive start for Bayern Munich, who appeared as a substitute against ULM.
