Cordarrelle Patterson is a real-life superhero. We’re talking Batman meets the Flash because this dude can do it all on the field! He lines up at running back or wide receiver depending on how his team wants to mess with the heads of the defense. But he not only catches passes and runs the rock, no sir. He returns punts and kicks and serves as a dangerous weapon on special teams.

That’s who we’re talking about right now! Patterson and his insane ability to affect multiple aspects of each game. And this offseason, he reunited with his Atlanta Falcons head coach and current Pittsburgh Steeler offensive coordinator Arthur Smith. Why you may ask? Because Smith, despite his flaws, was the first person to fully unleash the abilities of Cordarrelle Patterson.

Can Cordarrelle Patterson be Fantasy-Relevant

In Pittsburgh, Patterson joins a deep backfield and thin wideout room. Jaylen Warren and Najee Harris loom large as the two top running backs. No lie, these guys are really good. Last season, they combined for 1,819 yards and 12 touchdowns while serving as the foundation of the offense. They aren’t going anywhere this year, but that doesn’t mean the veteran won’t be on the field too.

The wide receivers on the Pittsburgh Steelers are pretty much George Pickens and a lot of guys you don’t know. Calvin Austin III, Scotty Miller, and Van Jefferson look like the best of the rest, but that’s without considering Cordarrelle Patterson. He could easily be lining up early and often as a wideout this year. Patterson has spent the majority of his career strictly as a wide receiver and totaled 441 catches for 2,795 yards and 16 TDs, which is nothing to brush off.

Return Man Patterson and New Kickoff Rules

But the biggest reason to be high on Cordarrelle Patterson is the new kickoff rules. This offseason, rules were implemented to stop excessive touchbacks while still protecting players. Most importantly, the new rules will give returners a better chance at making a big play.

Most important among the changes are that only the kicker and the returners, like Patterson, will be allowed to move before the ball hits the ground or is touched by a returner inside the 20. The rest of the defenders will be lined up between the 30 and 35-yard line. This means kick returners like Cordarrelle Patterson should have the time and space to erupt big time this season.

Cordarrelle Patterson is a Swiss Army knife who can do just about anything on the football field. Patterson’s move to Pittsburgh, combined with the new kickoff rules, is going to help him exceed his expected fantasy output.
