The Dallas Cowboys are parting ways with tight end Peyton Hendershot. In a move that was just announced, the Cowboys have traded Hendershot to the Kansas City Chiefs for a late-round pick. The move comes as the team refines its roster in preparation for the 2024 NFL season.

The Peyton Hendershot story began in Dallas in 2022. An undrafted free agent from Indiana University, he quickly made a name for himself. Standing at 6-foot-4 and weighing 254 pounds, he impressed during his rookie season.

Hendershot's Journey With The Dallas Cowboys

Hendershot played in all 17 games in 2022 and had 11 receptions for 103 yards and two touchdowns. Particularly, he had great synergy with rookie, Jake Ferguson. Last year, though, was a struggle. Hendershot's stock dropped when Dallas took Luke Schoonmaker in the second round, but Hendershot also suffered an ankle injury during Week 3 that ultimately placed him on injured reserve.

As a result, he only played eight games, catching only four passes for 38 yards. A surgery during the offseason looked to repair the damage being done by his lingering ankle issues. Cowboys fans will remember Hendershot for his memorable end zone celebration.

On Thanksgiving in 2022, after scoring another touchdown, Hendershot, Dalton Schultz, Jake Ferguson, and Sean McKeon devised one of the wildest celebrations. All four men proceeded to jump into an oversized Salvation Army kettle and began to play Whack-a-Mole in the kettle. This stunt then went viral, quite possibly making it one of the signature moments of the season

Impact On The Dallas Cowboys Roster

The trade of Hendershot likely means the Cowboys are styaing with the rest of their in-house unit. With Schoonaker having locked in his position and then the breakout candidates in John Stephens Jr. and Princeton Fant, releasing Hendershot can make way for them. The Cowboys also brought in undrafted free agent Brevyn Spann-Ford, which continued to make things a little more competitive.

    Future Prospects for Hendershot

Hendershot should get a chance with the Chiefs. His past performances, especially in his rookie season, show the potential that he possesses. As he moves forward, looking to grab another opportunity, Kansas City may be the place where he makes his mark

From his rookie season contributions to a viral end-zone celebration, Hendershot certainly made his mark on his squad and peer players. Now, as the Cowboys move forward, the hope is that this decision helps them build an even stronger roster for the future.
