Toto Wolff Reacts: Norris's Win Changes Championship Landscape

Lando Norris’s great performance at the Dutch GP has made Toto Wolff declare that the Formula 1 constructors’ championship is now “up for grabs”. Norris claimed his second career win by a margin of more than 22 seconds over Verstappen. This dominant performance has drastically changed the balance of the championship.

Norris’s victory sees him cut the Red Bull star’s advantage to 70 points, with only nine races left in the 2024 calendar season. The control and dominance in the race he showed were similar to what Verstappen displayed last season. Norris was the fastest in that particular race even though he completed his stint using 42-lap-old tires which underlined his ability and the machine’s performance.

Toto Wolff’s Assessment of the Championship Race

In an interview with media including Crash.net at Zandvoort, Toto Wolff analyzed the current state of the championship. He praised McLaren’s recent upgrades, noting,

McLaren has proven in the past, since Austria last year that they brought upgrades to the car that landed spot on, he said. And that was just very impressive to see today. He’s basically annihilated all of the competition, with the fastest lap at the end on a 42-lap old hard. Twenty seconds in gap.

Drivers’ Championship and Mercedes’ Struggles

Regarding the drivers’ championship, Toto Wolff acknowledged that Max Verstappen still appears to have a firm grip on the title. However, he noted that McLaren’s recent pace and Red Bull’s recent difficulties could alter the standings, he stated that

The driver championship, I think Max to a certain degree has it under control still, but it will be exciting to see whether there is a change of powers, and how much can we participate in that, because we were able in the last few races, he added.

In the Dutch GP, race Mercades spending a rather difficult weekend earned seventh and eighth places. Toto Wolff blamed other poor performances on poor practice sessions which were occasioned by bad weather periods. Toto Wolff also thinks that Mercedes needs to look more closely at how their new floor design affects the car. The Dutch Grand Prix key message has shown that the championship now has another force, or more precisely a team, in the McLarens. As the season goes on, teams’ relationships and standings can change. Adapting to these changes will be important for the constructors’ and drivers’ championships.
