Patrick Mahomes Sr., the father of two-time defending Super Bowl champion Patrick Mahomes II of the Kansas City Chiefs, pleaded guilty to his third DWI charge or more this Tuesday.

Mahomes Sr., like his son, has had a career in professional sports, playing in MLB for 11 years. He began his professional career as a pitcher with the Minnesota Twins, spending his first four years with the team. He then bounced around the league for the remainder of his career and played for the Red Sox, New York Mets, Texas Rangers, Chicago Cubs, and Pittsburgh Pirates, before closing out his career in 2003. Then in 2019 he was inducted to the Sioux Falls Canaries Hall of Fame.

Patrick Mahomes Sr., 54, was first arrested for DWI in September 2008 in South Dakota, as revealed by District Judge Kerry Russell during Tuesday’s hearing. His second arrest came in 2018, leading to a sentence of 40 days in jail, served on weekends, according to Smith County records.

The most recent incident occurred on February 3, just days before the Chiefs‘ Super Bowl against the San Francisco 49ers at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas. Mahomes Sr. was arrested for driving while intoxicated after failing a sobriety test. He was detained but later released on a $10,000 bond.

On Tuesday, Mahomes Sr. entered a plea deal, which his agent confirmed. In a statement, his agent said, “Today, Mr. Mahomes entered a guilty plea in his case pursuant to a written plea agreement.” Mahomes Sr.’s attorney added, “Our client is now living a sober life, and we believe that the steps he has taken to better his life helped us achieve a plea recommendation for probation.”

Patrick Mahomes Sr is scheduled to be sentenced on September 23. According to the plea deal, he will serve five years of probation with one year of “intense” supervision. If he meets the terms of the plea deal, he will avoid prison time.
