Shedeur Sanders Signs Major Unprecedented $4.7M Deal With Nike

Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders is the first college player to sign an NIL deal with Nike. Nike blood runs in the family vein. His father, Colorado head coach Deion Sanders, has claimed signature Nike cleats in his name. Shedeur ended his first season at Colorado with 3,230 passing yards and 27 touchdowns in 2023. He only threw 3 interceptions and was sacked 52 times.

What details do we know so far?

    Building The Sanders’ Nike Legacy

Officially, the complete information of the deal is private, but we know he signed a footwear and apparel deal with Nike. The young star has a penchant for NIL deals, taking notes on his father’s business forte. He’s worked with SMAC Entertainment and Constance Schwartz-Morini. He’s signed with Gatorade, KFC, and Urban Outfitters. He has his barbecue sauce. He was tabbed as the BRADY brand’s long-term ambassador and promoted Mercedes Benz.

Sanders commented on his podcast, 2legendary with Shedeur Sanders, about his plan to carry the ball from his father’s legendary hands.

I would want to build on it. I want to build on it. Have like a different version,” Sanders comments on his father’s collaboration with Nike. “But I think the concept, because I feel like it’s more… like now, like just looking at life and looking at everything, it’s more about generational. It’s more about what could be passed down year after year after year after year rather than everybody starting to think they’re a whole new wave and whole new because there’s no real substance behind it.

College Athletes Respected for Their Hard Work

NIL sets a new precedent for college athletes to profit from their sport. College athletes can fulfill any need of their collaborators by building businesses, making endorsement deals, marketing on social media, and raising money for charity, among many other monetary routes. They’re making money with personal appearances, signing autographs, modeling for underwear brands, and endorsing political candidates.

Compared to other brands, Nike has been conservative in its NIL deals. Some of the most active brands include Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers and Beats by Dre. With profits flowing in, college athletes can build their public image as professionals and focus their energy on the most crucial thing: perfecting their game. These brand deals will give college athletes the resources to master their skill sets full-time. However, some fans might say that football is turning into an industry that is more concerned about profiting from celebrities than playing quality games and entertainment.

What do you think? Does NIL deal support or damage football culture? How much should college Athletes get paid? Let us know in the comments!
