Dolphins Claim Impressive Wide Receiver Off Waivers

The Miami Dolphins were extremely shorthanded after Tuesday's 53-man roster cutdown date. Following the surprising release of Erik Ezukanma and numerous injuries, the Dolphins' roster was left with only four receivers. Naturally, they took to the waiver wire to claim a new pass catcher. Names like Panthers' Terrance Marshal Jr., Texans' Quentez Cephus, and Seahawks' D'wayne Eskridge became available, however the Dolphins went in a different direction. Who did they sign?

Dolphins Claim Packers' WR Grant Dubose

With just four available receivers, the Dolphins pursued the waived Green Bay Packer, Grant Dubose, as the fifth pass catcher. General Manager Chris Grier talked about the acquisition glowingly.

“He’s got size. He’s tough,” Dolphins General Manager Chris Grier said about DuBose. “Really good route-runner. Good hands, and how physical he is in his play.”

Head Coach Mike McDaniel shares connections with the Green Bay Packers organization and received strong indications that the Packers wanted to keep Dubose in Green Bay. The signing of DuBose necessitated a corresponding move. To make room, the team released Offensive Lineman Jack Driscoll, trimming their offensive line depth from ten to nine players.

    Grant Dubose's Upside

Grant Dubose came into the NFL out of trials and tribulations. He led his high school football team to four consecutive regional championships out in Alabama before attending the D-II HBCU Miles College in 2019. COVID derailed his college career before he transferred to the Charlotte 49ers.

During his first season with the Charlotte 49ers, DuBose quickly established himself as the team’s top target, recording 62 catches for 892 yards, averaging 14.4 yards per reception, and scoring six touchdowns in 12 starts. He continued to shine in 2022, leading Charlotte once again with 63 receptions for 787 yards, averaging 12.4 yards per catch, and reaching the end zone a team-high nine times in 12 games (11 starts). His outstanding play earned him a spot on the All-Conference USA second team.

    Dubose's NFL Career

Dubose struggled with injuries in his rookie season with the Green Bay Packers following his drafting in 2023. The Packers also hold a notably full receiver room, with talent from the one to the seven spots. These realities made it difficult for Dubose to maximize his potential. Dubose's 6-foot-2 200lb frame still holds NFL strength and versatility at only 23 years old.

Through college and NFL preseason Dubose has displayed a knack for route running, consistent and reliable hands, great zone recognition, and an innate ability to convert the catch to run. Although he lacks top-end speed and quickness, Dubose can change direction and bounce off defenders with his strong frame. In the Dolphins' current receiving room, Dubose adds reliable versatility.

Dolphins Injured Receiver Room Got Needed Help

The Miami Dolphins receiving depth chart sported only four players before the acquisition of Grant Dubose. Expected wide receiver No.3 Odell Beckham Jr. was assigned to the PUP list to begin the season, sitting him for the first four games of the 2024 season. Expected wide receiver four River Cracraft was placed on injured reserve as well. The Dolphins waived preseason standout Erik Ezukanma to make the 53-man limit, though, he is understood to be returning via practice squad.

Grant Dubose's savvy route running and reliable hands make him an asset to the Dolphins with the thin depth chart. His ability to sneak into zones and make the most of each catch can be a key tool to pair with Tyreek Hill and Jaylen Waddle's speed for South Beach.
