Cannes Film Festival’s Top Prize: Palme d’Or
The biggest prize at the Cannes Film Festival is the Palme d’Or, or “Golden Palm.” The award is given to the director of the best film in the competition. The Palme d’Or is considered the most prestigious prize a filmmaker can win, perhaps even more than an Oscar. This year’s Palme d’Or went to Sean Baker, who directed Anora, a film about a New York prostitute who gets involved with the Russian oligarchy. Many are likely expecting Anora to win multiple Oscars because of its positive reception at Cannes.
Winner of the Grand Prix
The second most coveted award at the Cannes Film Festival is the Grand Prix or the Grand Prize of the Festival. Presented by the festival’s jury, the Grand Prix is given to the winning film’s director. This year’s Grand Prix went to Payal Kapadia, director of All We Imagine as Light, a Malayalam language film about women in Mumbai figuring out different aspects of their lives and relationships. Kapadia previously won for best documentary film at the 2021 Cannes Film Festival. This win marks another milestone for the Indian director.

The Jury Prize, often given to films looking for a distributor, was given to Jacques Audiard, the director of Emilia Pérez. Karla Sofía Gascón, Selena Gomez, Adriana Paz, and Avatar star Zoe Saldaña all won the Best Actress award as an ensemble. Jesse Plemons won Best Actor for Kinds of Kindness. Additionally, Miguel Gomes won Best Director for Grand Tour, while Coralie Fargeat won Best Screenplay for The Substance.
