New York Mets Bullpen Implodes In 8-5 Loss

A grand slam by Arizona Diamondbacks Center Fielder Corbin Carroll sunk the New York Mets hopes of winning on Wednesday night. New York lost 8-5 thanks to five RBI from Carroll in the game. The Arizona Diamondbacks got off to a quick start jumping out to a 4-0 lead after four innings. The New York Mets offense, to their credit, rebounded by tacking on four runs in the top of the fifth and scored another run in the top of the sixth inning. That was when the train went off the tracks for the New York Mets.

After New York Relief Pitcher Phil Maton recorded two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning, New York Mets Skipper Carlos Mendoza turned to Closer Edwin Diaz for a four-out save. He proceeded to walk two batters to load the bases. Then Carroll came up to the plate and broke the game open with a grand slam. It was the sixth blown save by Diaz this season. Will the bullpen of the New York Mets be able to improve over the final month of the regular season?

New York Mets and Their Shaky Bullpen

New York's loss dropped them to four games back of the third and final National League Wild Card spot. They are 20th in the league with a 4.08 bullpen ERA. Edwin Diaz has not been good this season, and Wednesday night was another example of that. He is 5-3 with a 4.30 ERA this year. Diaz has been especially bad in August when his team has needed him most. He has an awful 6.75 ERA in August. With only a 13.1% chance to make the MLB Playoffs according to FanGraphs, the New York Mets bullpen will need to perform far better.

Looking Ahead To This Afternoon's Game

The Mets play the final game of their three-game series with the Arizona Diamondbacks this afternoon. NY sends one of their better starting pitchers, David Peterson, to the bump later today countered by Ryne Nelson from Arizona. Peterson's 2.85 ERA would be fifth-best in the league if he had enough starts to qualify. Hip surgery kept him out until late May.

The New York Mets are in dire need of a win this afternoon and securing a series win. Time is running out for NY to make a true playoff push. They have scored eight runs in the first two games of this series and will need their bats to help carry them once again both in this afternoon's game and over the final 30 games of the regular season.
