The Best Plants for Low-Maintenance Landscaping

Low-maintenance landscaping has become very popular amongst homeowners. Not everyone has the time to keep up with their landscaping. Many plants require a lot of attention, which can be a lot of upkeep for those of us who have busy lives. Whether you don't have a green thumb or prefer to have a garden that can fend for itself, low-maintenance plants are the way to go. In this article, I'm going to go over some of the best low-maintenance plants to add to your garden. I’ve included ground plants, perennials, shrubs, and more.

Best Low-Maintenance Plants for Various Environments

Here are some of the best low-maintenance plants you can add to your garden:

    Ground Covers

When it comes to ground cover, creeping Thyme is one of the best choices for low-maintenance landscaping. This plant thrives in full sun and is drought-resistant. If you've done any gardening in the past, you know how hard it is to find plants to fill those completely sunny spots in your yard. Its fragrant leaves add an aromatic touch to pathways and between stepping stones.

Periwinkle, or Vinca Minor, is another great plant for ground cover because of its evergreen foliage. It thrives in shady environments, so if you have any areas you want to fill in under trees or in low-light spots, this is the plant to go with. Periwinkle spreads quickly and creates a dense carpet of green, helping to suppress weeds.

    Shrubs

Boxwood is a popular shrub because you can get a formal look with minimal effort. This evergreen shrub has dense foliage that can be shaped, making it popular for those looking for a structured garden design. It's slow to grow, so it doesn't need pruning very often. Additionally, it adapts to various soil types well.

Forsythia is a beautiful shrub with bright yellow blooms. It's hardy and requires minimal pruning. Many love to include this shrub in their garden because it adds a pop of color. Forsythia grows quickly, so it may need shaping more often than other low-maintenance shrubs. However, it generally requires less attention compared to other flowering shrubs.

    Ornamental Grasses

Ornamental grasses are one of my favorite low-maintenance plants. Blue Fescue is a small ornamental grass known for its amazing blue-green foliage and drought tolerance. Blue Fescue requires little care beyond occasional trimming to remove dead foliage.

Miscanthus, or Maiden Grass, is another beautiful, low-maintenance plant. It makes a great statement piece as it's tall and dramatic looking. It thrives with minimal maintenance. Miscanthus is tolerant of a variety of soil types and requires only occasional pruning to maintain its shape and remove dead foliage.

    Perennials

Black-Eyed Susan is a vibrant perennial that brings a pop of color to your garden. It is known for its low water needs and long blooming season, which is from the summer into fall. What's even better is that this flower comes from native North American wildflowers, meaning it's native to most of the United States.

Daylilies are found in gardens all over due to their hardiness and wide range of colors. They are adaptable to various soil types, and their minimal care requirements make them ideal for those who want gorgeous flowers without putting in a lot of effort. Daylilies can also serve as effective ground covers, helping to fill in gaps and add visual interest.

    Succulents and Cacti

Sedum, commonly known as Stonecrop, is a drought-resistant succulent with fleshy leaves. It’s easy to grow and thrives in sunny spots, making it a great choice for rock gardens or dry areas. Sedum requires little water and minimal care. It’s great for adding texture to a space.

The Barrel Cactus is a standout plant in arid or desert-themed gardens. With its ability to survive with minimal watering, the Barrel Cactus offers a dramatic visual element and fits perfectly into a xeriscape or desert garden setting.

    Wrapping Up

Choosing to add low-maintenance plants to your garden has a range of benefits, including less upkeep, drought resistance, pest resistance, and increased garden beauty. Consider your garden’s specific conditions when choosing plants to ensure they can thrive. Be sure to check out native plants as well. Not only will they thrive, but they also support local wildlife and improve biodiversity.
