Ravens Sign Tyler Huntley To Roster

In one of those surprising yet welcome moves, Tyler Huntley is back with the Baltimore Ravens. After being released from the Cleveland Browns, Huntley will ink a deal with the Ravens practice squad. It is a reunion when the Ravens are getting ready with a revving engine for the new season, amid a few key changes in the quarterback lineup.

    Tyler Huntley's Unexpected Return

The team re-signed Huntley just one day after Ravens General Manager Eric DeCosta intimated that the team might bring in another quarterback. The Browns let him go after they couldn't find a trade partner for him. Bringing him back was pretty much a no-brainer as the team had an open practice squad spot. He'll now be working alongside sixth-round draft pick Devin Leary.

Right now, the principal backup to Lamar Jackson is 38-year-old Josh Johnson. He carries a load of experience and is valued for his leadership and coaching on the field. DeCosta credited Johnson with being a mentor for Jackson and for the overall positive vibe that he brings to the team. The Ravens will start their season this Thursday against the Kansas City Chiefs, and having Johnson in the backup role brings a sense of stability.

    Past Ravens Experience For Huntley

Tyler Huntley indeed spent some time with the Ravens. With his NFL Draft not calling his name, he was signed as an undrafted free agent in 2020. He and Jackson have been friends since high school in South Florida, playing against each other. Over the past four years with the Ravens, Huntley has made 10 starts and has shown he can rise to the occasion if called upon. He's compiled 2,243 passing yards, 10 touchdowns, and eight interceptions. He also has 595 rushing yards and three rushing touchdowns in 22 career games.

Despite putting up a decent performance with Baltimore, the Ravens did not re-sign Huntley this offseason. Instead, he signed with the Cleveland Browns. The Browns had a crowd of quarterbacks, which included Deshaun Watson, Jameis Winston, and Dorian Thompson-Robinson. Huntley would have his time with the Browns come to a close as they released him when they weren't able to find a trade partner.

The decision by the Ravens to bring back Huntley speaks to the ongoing assessment being carried out at the quarterback position. DeCosta has hinted that the assessment of available players will continue and decisions made based on team needs. While Huntley is not in the main lineup at this time, his addition to the practice squad shows his value and commitment to a solid quarterback room.

    Looking Ahead

An experienced quarterback will be important in their opening game against the Chiefs. Johnson was experienced, Leary had potential, and Huntley knew the team. Adding him back ensures some sanity in the quarterback depth for the Ravens, whatever it may be. This move makes complete sense to prepare them for anything.

The return of Tyler Huntley spells the best for the Ravens. With his past performance with Baltimore, coupled with his quick readaptation to the practice squad position, he holds a lot of value. As the season gets underway with the Ravens, adding Huntley to the fold will bring an added layer of security and depth to this year's quarterback lineup. All in all, the Ravens are looking in good shape, with experience and potential mixing well in their quarterback roster.
