Opinion: The Washington Commanders Jerseys Crush It, You Haters

The Washington Commanders jerseys are just fine. Yes, I will die on this hill. All of you are wrong. A lot of the hate is directed at the alternate black uniforms. I like those uniforms. I think the overall black color with the gold numbers and burgundy outline is a tough presentation.

Many Commanders fans believe this uniform looks like the Pittsburgh Steelers’ uniform. Ok, I don’t see the comparison. Our alternate black uniforms look better than all their uniforms. Black and yellow to the eyes are completely annoying and clash like crazy. Steelers Jerseys make their players look like walking PowerPoint presentations on the field.

I’ve yet to hear what alternatives fans would have if they dropped this gorgeous uniform. All you’ll hear is, “Anything but this.” Most critics tie their uniform woes to Washington’s forever drama with their name change. I do not feel it’s a branding issue. It could have been any name, and people would have complained about the color combinations. The Washington Commanders jerseys have some valid qualities that many people miss because of their disposition of seeing an NFL team look good on the field.

The alternative black uniform provides a modern approach to burgundy and gold. Black is tough, a unifier, and makes burgundy and gold stand out, not in an annoying way. It presents those colors as welcoming and easy on the eyes. You’re not staring at green and silver or blue and white, but three colors that present a team that brings unknown talents and surprises to the 2024 NFL Season.

Washington Commanders Jerseys: The Black Alternate Uniform Have Power

Another argument for the black uniforms is that black is a strong color that presents power on the field. It already gives a psychological advantage against opponents just by its mere presence. Let’s go deeper. According to ColorMeanings.com, the color burgundy is a force to be reckoned stating, “If you’re looking for comfort and reassurance, you won’t find it with burgundy. This color leads with strength and force, which makes it somewhat intimidating…” The site described gold as a color of optimism, uplifting and enlightening.

The black uniforms also have a special connection to Nov. 27, 2022. The Washington Commanders beat the Atlanta Falcons 19-13. During that game, former Commanders Cornerback Kendall Fuller secured the win, intercepting former Falcons QB Marcus Mariota in the end zone with 58 seconds left in the game.

So, we did win in these jerseys…

Once, but I digress.

Two years later, Mariota is a Commander. Coincidence? I think not. It’s the black jersey.

Washington Commanders Jerseys: Gold Pants Are Back!

The Washington Commanders Jerseys also will see the return of the gold pants to their attire this season. This was announced via their X account, which read, “Gold pants are officially BACK in our rotation.” For the die-hards out there, this is a welcomed return to the franchise. The gold pants are a cornerstone of Washington’s uniform, and it’s been that way for at least 40 years.

It started in the early 1930s through the late 1970s, changing to white or burgundy in later years. The team website states, “The decision was made after hearing from several fans who wanted to see the iconic look return to the team…Now, as the Commanders prepare for the upcoming season, the franchise has decided to add some of its past into the new era, led by head coach Dan Quinn and general manager Adam Peters…”

The Washington Commanders jerseys are the most well-balanced in the NFC East. Maybe it is me, my bad Navy Veteran eyes, or it’s just fans and haters looking for problems with the Burgundy and Gold.
