Panthers Sign CB Lonnie Johnson Jr.

Former Kentucky cornerback Lonnie Johnson Jr. signed with the Carolina Panthers Wednesday. He was cut by the Houston Texans last week. NFL reporter Tom Pelissero tweeted that Johnson will begin with the Panthers practice squad, but he will likely be promoted to the main roster before the start of the season.

Lonnie Johnson Jr. compiled 64 tackles, one sack, and an interception in his two years with the Wildcats. His performance put him on the radar of scouts, and he was drafted by the Houston Texans in the second round of the 2019 NFL Draft.

Johnson spent three seasons with the Texans after they drafted him. He was then traded to the Kansas City Chiefs after his stint in Houston. He also played for the Tennessee Titans and the New Orleans Saints. This year, he signed again with the Texans but was released during roster cut downs.

Now, Johnson gets a fresh start with the Panthers. If he practices well, he could very easily find his way onto the 53-man roster. This may just be the opportunity Johnson needs to get his career back on track in the NFL. A move to Carolina offers him an excellent chance to show off his skills and make a difference with his new team.
