Pokemon Unbound: an Amazing Adventure in 2024

Pokemon Unbound is a ROM hack developed for Emulators. Pokemon is known for its various games and their styles, Even more so, their publisher Nintendo, seems to like to take down anything using their assets or looking like its Pokemon. While for the most part, it's understandable it kind of takes away from the creativity some of their fans have.

If you don't know there are emulators out there that let you play old games from older consoles through emulations, these emulations vary from Dreamcast to even Nintendo Switch. These Emulators run ROMs and these ROMs are basically old games, files, and all. While all these are nice, most and more are getting struck down, especially by Nintendo, and through the fire one remains to see its completion, Pokemon Unbound.

What is Pokemon Unbound?

Pokemon Unbound is a ROM Hack of Pokemon FireRed. This is created by the user Skeli who started making hacks in 2016 and decided to do their own resulting in this masterpiece. The story starts like this:

You are in the Borrius region, Centuries ago the Borrian people were in a war and the war was lost after the king of the foreign land unleashed a a weapon. After the Borrian army returned home, a coup was established as the people summoned a dark force, but before it could do anything the King sealed the power away. Years later, a group known as the "Shadows" intends to release the dark force once again, will you stop them? Or will you uncover something else bigger?

Pokemon Unbound is a remade game from the bottom up that lets you experience a whole new Pokemon game with a new storyline with the Pokemon you loved from before. To say the least, it's a new entry to a series, an unofficial series that is fanmade and frankly good. While I haven't touched Unbound in its entirety, I do plan to when I can get an Anbernic to play emulators on. This game introduces Mega back into the franchise, Megas is a special kind of evolution for Pokemon, it's a temporary mode that some mons can do and take on a bigger and better form allowing for newer strategies against others or you.

This game feels like a different take to another ROM that I have played called Radical Red, where it introduces everything up to the current gen, Megas, Raid with the ability to dynamax, and every generation up to 9. It also introduces a way to randomize the Pokemon and Items so it's always a new (and sometimes difficult) experience. Radical Red is MEANT to be difficult, but not impossible and I am hoping Unbound can deliver the same results.

Pokemon Unbound Features

This hack has a lot of features from upgrades to quality-of-life fixes.

• New Engine: Pokemon Unbound sues the Complete FireRed Upgrade to create systems that are equal to Gen 8's systems in FireRed's world. This engine includes catching Pokemon from Gen 1 to Gen 7. All the while you use moves and abilities found in those Gens! It will also include updated graphics and a unique mission system for some extra rewards as well as mini-games and puzzles to enjoy. It also introduces Difficulty Modes to allow the engine to pump the AI to the max or for you to relax and enjoy the game.
• Quality of Life: These features include unlimited bag space, auto-run, dex-nav (as seen in Gen 3), daily raid (like Gen 7), and more.
• HM System: Pokemon Unbound uses a new HM system so you no longer have to carry around an HM slave, As long as a Pokemon can learn the HM it can use it outside of battle!
• Custom OST: Unbound also comes with 180 originally composed songs for the game, allowing you to experience new and original music while catching your favorite Pokemon!
• Character Customization: You can choose up to 300 combinations to create your character and see them in the overworld.

Final Thoughts

I will be excited to play this game and give it a hands-on treatment to see how it plays, admittedly I did download it before its full release and I only played a bit of it choosing Beldum as my start but I stopped shortly after and that was because I was dedicated to playing (and attempting) to beat Radical Red. However, it will be a fresh experience and I can't wait to see what is in store for it now that it has a full release.
