Cleveland Browns Announce Breakthrough 20-Year Stadium Deal

Amid speculation regarding where the Cleveland Browns will play in the future, the team made an announcement regarding the team's current home field on the shores of Lake Erie. The team has played in its current "Cleveland Browns Stadium" since the franchise reentered the NFL in 1999. With abundant speculation regarding whether the Cleveland Browns 2.0 franchise will move away from the open-air, 67,000-seat stadium in the near future, the team held a press conference to announce news regarding its current home.

While there were no updates regarding whether a prospective Browns move into a domed stadium near the Cleveland airport, the team did announce that their plainly-named current home will adopt a new name in time for a Week 1 home matchup against the Dallas Cowboys: "Huntington Bank Field."

Cleveland Browns Stadium Now to be Known as Huntington Bank Field

The Cleveland Browns were in no rush to find a naming-rights sponsor for their home field. From 1999-2013, the facility was simply known as "Cleveland Browns Stadium." However, after Randy Lerner sold the franchise to Jimmy Haslam in 2012, the organization sold naming rights to Ohio-based company FirstEnergy. The building was known as FirstEnergy Stadium until a mutual agreement between the team and company to terminate the deal in early 2023, and the structure reverted to being known as "Cleveland Browns Stadium" until Tuesday's announcement.

The new naming rights go to Columbus, Ohio, based Huntington Bank under a 20-year partnership. While it is not currently known for how long the Browns will play in their current stadium, the naming rights will transfer to any new stadium in the Cleveland area that the team may move to within the next two decades. This was clarified by Huntington Bank chairman, President and CEO Steve Steinour who said in a press release:

"Whether in the existing stadium or a new one, the Browns' commitment to Northeast Ohio will continue to spur significant economic growth and development for years to come, and we are excited to be a part of that future."

Cleveland Browns To Host Dallas Cowboys On Sunday

The Cleveland Browns will open the 2024 NFL season on Sunday by hosting the Cowboys at the newly-christened Huntington Bank in a game scheduled to kick off at 4:45 ET.

Cleveland is expected to start Quarterback Deshaun Watson. Watson, who had his contract restructured last week to free up $36 million in cap space for the Browns, has had much of his preseason hampered by what the team called "arm soreness." Watson has played in just 12 games over two seasons due to injury since coming to Cleveland in a blockbuster 2022 trade with the Houston Texans.

The Browns will not yet feature Running Back Nick Chubb for Sunday's opener, as the star rusher is expected to miss at least the first four games of the 2024 season. He is still recovering from surgeries to repair both the ACL and MCL in his left knee after he was gruesomely injured in a game against the Pittsburgh Steelers in September of last season.
