Fantasy Football Running Backs Start’Em, Sit’Em | Week 1

Fantasy football is back, and TotalApexSports is here to give you weekly start and sit selections for running backs!

These selections will consist of two players who are worthy of a start and two players who you should leave out of your lineups. I will be avoiding must-start players such as Christian McCaffrey. Rather, the focus will be on guys who are more on the fringe, and guys with more question marks.

Starting with week one, here are the best start and sit options for the running back position!

Must Start Running Backs

David Montgomery

Running back David Montgomery has a great matchup heading into week one. The Los Angeles Rams were average against the run last season allowing 4.2 YPC to opposing running backs. Heading into 2024 without Hall of Famer Aaron Donald, that number could become even larger.

Star running back Jahmyr Gibbs has been dealing with a hamstring injury in recent weeks. That opens the door for Montgomery to get the king’s share of the touches behind the best offensive line in football.

Expect David Montgomery to get 15+ carries on the ground and to find the end zone in week one!

Miami Running Backs: Both Raheem Mostert and De’Von Achane

Despite the Miami Dolphins backfield being a committee, I believe both Achane and Mostert will be must starts a majority of the season.

A week one matchup against the Jacksonville Jaguars boasts one of the highest projected totals of the week at 50 points. Savvy head coach Mike McDaniels led one of the most efficient running attacks in all of football last season.

Bank on that to continue heading into 2024!

Must Sit Running Backs

D’Andre Swift

The Titans have been one of the best teams against the run for years now. Tennessee finished top five against the run in 2023.

With little to no improvements on the offensive line in Chicago, Swift will be a matchup dependent play often in 2024. The uncertainty of the offense under Caleb Williams makes me hesitate when it comes to D’Andre Swift in week one.

D’Andre Swift the player is solid, but the situation remains to be seen. If you have any other viable options heading into week one, wait and see on D’Andre Swift.

Final Thoughts

David Montgomery is the best play of the weekend. Everyone has been all over Jahmyr Gibbs, and rightfully so. However, head coach Dan Campbell loves his big bruising back and is going to use him all night against the rams.

The Dolphins backfield is clearly spectacular, and it will be a committee most of the season. However, they were fully capable of supporting both backs in fantasy leagues and expect that to continue in week one.

D’Andre swift is a good player, but the situation and the everpresent Khalil Herbert make me worried in week one. I think he will be a good option throughout the season, but believe it when you see it.
