Kansas City Chiefs Postgame Reactions To Season Opener Victory Over the Ravens

The Kansas City Chiefs started the 2024 NFL season 1-0 after defeating the Baltimore Ravens 27-20 in their season opener at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

Patrick Mahomes and Xavier Worthy led the offensive effort, while the defense worked collectively to get the job done. Below are postgame reactions from Chiefs players as they prepare for their Week 2 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals, next Sunday, September 15, at 4:25 PM EDT.

    Chiefs Offense Quotes

Head coach Andy Reid opened the conference by discussing injuries, noting that the team came out of the game mostly healthy. He also praised the game environment, saying, “Thank you to the fans, they were great today as they always are. What a wild environment down there, it was two heavyweights fighting to the end. When they say it’s a game of inches, it might be shorter than that.”

Mahomes commented on the Ravens’ final play, reflecting on how close it was to forcing overtime. “Definitely nerve-wracking, because it looked good from my angle on the sideline, but then on that first view you could see the cleat […] That’s a great football team, and I’m sure we’ll see them again sometime in the playoffs.”

Mahomes also spoke about the offense’s growth. “We build all throughout the year, and you can see, Rashee just picked up right where he left off last year. Xavier made some big plays, and so we’re just going to continue to build and hopefully get Hollywood back and see what this offense can really be.”

    Chiefs Defense Quotes

Defensive tackle Felix Anudike-Uzomah reflected on his key fumble recovery after Chris Jones stripped Lamar Jackson. “Chris is a phenomenal player, it’s all glory to Chris. He made a great play, got the ball out, and all I had to do was help him out and get the fumble recovery.”

Anudike-Uzomah went on to talk about the defense’s mindset and how they managed to only surrender a single touchdown. “It’s about mentality, how bad do you want it? We preach it every day. It’s about effort. Effort wins championships, and that’s one thing we talked about in the locker room. It resulted in a big win, Anudike-Uzomah said.”

Chris Jones shared his thoughts on slowing down Jackson and what the defense still needs to improve. He also discussed the game’s final play, saying, “It was a lot of effort, a lot of grit from our defense. We were able to hold on. We were inches away from going into overtime in our first game of the year.”

    Final Thoughts

It wasn’t a perfect game for the two-time defending champions, but the Chiefs did what was necessary to secure the win over the Ravens. The offense, led by Mahomes, made key plays to push them over the finish line, while the defense kept them in the game with timely plays so the offense could find its groove.

The Game of Inches motto proved to be true tonight, and this will likely be a recurring theme throughout the season. Despite the close victory, it should not detract from the team’s collective performance across all three phases. With this hard-fought win in the books, the Chiefs will now focus on cleaning up their mistakes and preparing for their week 2 matchup against the Cincinnati Bengals.
