Colorado Buffaloes vs. Nebraska Cornhuskers Preview | September 7, 2024

In week one, the Colorado Buffaloes are coming off a close win against the North Dakota State University Bisons. The Buffaloes showcased an electric offense, but their defense is concerning for many CU fans. NDSU is a quality football team despite its FCS status. But, can the Buffs compete against the big and bad Nebraska Cornhuskers at their home-field advantage?

    Colorado Buffaloes’ Insecurity

Nebraska gets a chance at revenge after last season’s upset defeat against Colorado (who went 4–8 and 1–8 against the pac-12 2023). The game will take the primetime window, giving Coach Prime a chance to live up to his name. The audience can expect two of the most competitive teams to battle it out. With Colorado’s all-star offense, led by excellence with deep-pass threat Shedeur Sanders and stat-fiend Jimmy Horn Jr.

Colorado Buffaloes insider and 247Sports reporter Adam Munstereiger states the most significant area of improvement the Buffs need is,

“in defending the middle of the field. That’s where North Dakota State were making their plays in the rushing and passing games.” He told 247Sports. “This will be a statement game for the revamped defensive and offensive line.”

The Buffaloes have multiple transfers this year. They also sport a new defensive coordinator, Robert Livingston. We should expect a significantly different team.

Munstereiger comments on Colorado’s need to establish the run game:

“As you’re going to get into these tougher games against other teams, you’re going to have to be more well-balanced than the opener. I really still do believe in the running back talent on this roster.”

He gives credit to the Buffs’ dominant game passing, too.

“The other part of it is, yes you want to be balanced, but you have maybe the most dynamic passing offense in the entire country right now.”

    Nebraska Deal With Quarterback Uncertainty

Munstereiger comments on the Nebraska Cornhusker’s performance.

“Their offense line was good last year.” He told 247Sports. “They just had horrible quarterback play. It’s a better Nebraska football team than what Colorado faced on Folsom Field last year.”

Nebraska left a season last year that fell short at the QB position. Thus, they enlisted a new Freshman quarterback this season, Dylan Raiola. Nebraska expert “BigRedTwice”’ commented on the prospect.

“Quarterback play has been SUCH a liability recently, quite notoriously so last season.” They told Off Tackle Empire. “Nebraska’s curse may be to forever be “so close” to a breakthrough, so maybe Raiola doesn’t matter – but it’s tantalizing to think what could happen if there was someone truly special at QB. He’s got as much chance of that as anyone we’ve had in ages.

He chose Nebraska. A team that hasn’t gone bowling since 2016 and has become a punchline for choking away truly absurd numbers of close games. Yeah, he’s getting paid – but it seems a reason for optimism for a player of that caliber to come here and play for Matt Rhule. That’s pretty exciting.”

We should expect a challenging offensive performance from the Nebraska Cornhuskers against the Colorado Buffaloes’ defense. As BRT astutely notes, their quarterback is too fresh to analyze predictions. They’re coming home from a 40–7 blowout win against UTEP, so it’s difficult to assess how fair the matchup will be.

Viewers can expect to see the Colorado Buffaloes’ running defense getting more action. They could have done a better job limiting NDSU quarterback Cam Miller’s running game last week. Nebraska’s stingy defense could win this game, especially because CU’s greatest asset is their passing gains.

    Conclusion

Colorado Buffaloes’ head coach, Deion “Coach Prime” Sanders, expressed his support for their offensive line, saying they “did well.” Indeed, the performance on the offensive front was a step up from last season. QB Shedeur Sanders blamed himself for NDSU’s pass-rushing pressure.

“Shedeur and ‘Roc’ (Tyler Brown) both ran a gasser for that because they both felt like it was on them,” Coach Prime told BuffStampede. “They protected our most valuable asset. And as long as they can keep him upright, I see us running up and down the field often.”
